Replace HD7970m with HD8970M in Alienware M17x R4

Hi,

Bit of a noob here. I've got a dead HD7970m in my M17x R4 & want to know if I can replace it with a HD8970m & if so, would it be a straight swap/plug n play? Or is there anything else I need be aware of or do to make it work? Cant play any games or edit photos at present.

Any & all comments/pointers greatly appreciated.

The 7970M has a 75w TDP while the 8970M has a 100w TDP, so you need to verify with Alienware/Dell that that laptop can handle a larger TDP card. Also, the 8970M hasn't been manufactured in some time, so you should talk with Alienware about a compatible upgrade, if one is available for that 6 year old laptop/
