R9 380 4gb fan wont spin on low "min fan speed"

When my amd settings for the gpu are under 1800(rough estemate) the fans dont spin, the program says they are spinning.

They spin for a few seconds when the pc is turning on but then stop until the settings are set(see title)

Also when i run a stronger game the pc just turnes off

The R9 380 is nearly a 10 year old card, have the heatsink and fans ever been cleaned? Do the fans spin freely by hand? (when powered off of course)

You could try a clean and re-paste if temperatures are high, but the fans may need replaced if they are dragging.

I have cleaned the paste and put a new one

Fans do spin freely when turned off

The fan speed slider doesn't work on some 380/390 models, i think it was those that have 0db built into vbios? Fans turn on at a specified temperature.

Hey, this WAS a great card in its day.  I am still using 2 R7's (370 and 390).  I just had to replace an RX 480 that experienced a little more issues than yours.  The fan would not spin at all.  I replaced it with an RX 7600 just last week.

What I'm trying to say is that it sounds like it needs intensive care and that will come to pass when you get a black screen.

Although it could be PSU, PCIE slot, motherboard, or low voltage in your electrical system.  Don't rule anything out.

If you have another card you can swap out for testing, I would recommend that.

I'm not sure how the R9 would handle some of the more recent games.  My R 7's are used for embroidery software , still on Win 7, which isn't that demanding .

If it ain't broke; don't fix it!
