Desktop tearing above 60Hz (in game is fine)

Hello,

I recently picked up a new monitor (MSI Optix G27C2) which is my first that handles anything above 60Hz. I've tried it at both 120Hz and 144Hz and in either case I get screen tearing at the desktop when the mouse moves. The problem is more prevalent as the refresh rate increases. I've tried a second of this same monitor and see the same issue - that, along with it being fine in game, suggests to me that the monitor is not at fault.

As mentioned, this does not occur in game - no tearing whatsoever. For a short duration after closing a game the desktop will also be fine. I tried updating my drivers to current but the issue didn't improve at all. Is there some setting I've missed to get 144Hz working without any issues at the desktop?

Windows 10 64-bit

Club3d R9 290 royalAce

Driver version 17.12.1 (have also tried 17.12.2)

Corsair HX750

MSI Optix G27C2 @ 1920x1080, 120Hz or 144Hz over DisplayPort or DVI
