Hi all,

I'm looking to purchase a monitor for design work (currently only use a laptop). But I'm having a hard hard time figuring out what I need. I see a lot of cheap 1080p monitors but I'm also reading that this isnt good enough and I'll need at least a 1440p monitor. Is this true or will I be okay with a 1080p monitor if it's only a 24 inch? I want to be sure I'm getting good color accuracy but don't want to spend more than $200. I've used a spyder calibration tool at work and I'm sure I could bring it home to use if needed. Any suggestions/recommendations are appreciated!

Actually I would open a ticket with the Designing software you have and ask them what is the best type of Monitor you need to run your designing software as long as your laptop has the minimum requirements to run the designing software.

If your are looking to design you will want an IPS 10 bit panel. They are far superior for color and gradiations. Stay away from TN and VA panels for design work.

If you would consider spending another 80 bucks over your budget this is the one I currently use and it is fine for design and gaming. I think you would be very happy with the result if you upped your budget to get this.

Whatever you decide you will likely not be happy with color or the way gradations are displayed on a non IPS monitor.

Check out the HP 27er. It's $189, carries a Techicolor Color Certification (according to HP), and has an IPS screen so no color shifting, plus it has almost universal acclaim. But you do need to do as elstaci‌ said and contact your software manufacturer as to your requirements, such as a 10 bit panel.
