Can we have an improved HDMI audio driver to avoid skipping?

Well, this problem been here forever. Not sure if AMD is completely aware, cause it doesn't happen on every setup.

I noticed most reports are related to GPU connected to av receivers, like Denon, Marantz and so.

I tried to change cables, go from HDMI to DP, it will improve a little on some circumstances but no solution at all.

It's so weird. I also noticed games that skip audio on particular scenes, like replays. But never in actual gaming or vice versa. And can be reproduced 100% all the times.

Could you finally give us a better HDMI audio driver? At least more tolerable to this skipping madness?

You could think it's because cables not able to reach data speed on some circumstances. But at lower resolutions gets worse, which makes no sense. So it's clearly a driver problem. Reaching to the lowest point at 640x480 where there is no audio at all. Crazy.

Again, the weakest point here are av receivers, don't know why. But same setup with nvidia won't have this skipping thing.

I'm using AMD 6000 series, but the problem goes to all series.

Edit: never mind. I notice you identified that it is cable issue.

The driver is way too sensitive. Makes no sense skipping audio and never skip video.

So I was suffering from HDMI link stability issues causing intermittend sound dropouts (cutting out / 'skipping') with an AMD Radeon RX6700XT in combination with both a Marantz N1606 (which would not recover after dropping out unless I changed the AVR mode from Auto to Direct or vice versa) and Denon X1200W (which drops out for about half a second and then continues).

I noticed so far that it happened most frequently in Fallout 4 and in AI The Somnium Files. What both had in common is that I was using Radeon Chill to limit the FPS because those games have issues when they reach high FPS. I suppose this low usage allowed the RX6700XT to downclock and lose HDMI connectivity momentarily.

It happened less frequently when playing a more graphically demanding, non FPS limited game, like Fort Solis.

This kind of matches what you write: "games that skip audio on particular scenes, like replays" and that it's worst "at 640x480 where there is no audio at all" - these are all low activity scenarios for a GPU.

So I do think that this HDMI connectivity instability is related to the AMD GPU entering a lower power state. I hope that this can somehow be brought to AMD's attention.

I'll try to clone the display instead of extending monitor 1 (DisplayPort) to "monitor 2" (the AVR connected through HDMI to keep it active) and see if that helps. It would sure be nice if the audio could be output to the HDMI without having to send an image there...
