9070xt Random crashes under load

Hi,

I was lucky enough to snag myself a 9070xt on release date.

Since installing in my pc i have been getting random shut downs, black screen and full fan spinning.

This appears to happen under moderate/heavy load.

I've had a check through the event viewer and its acknowledging the sudden shutdown but providing no more details.

I've monitored temperatures and all seems fine not going over 70c CPU and GPU 60c and when idling like writing this post they are CPU 31.8 and GPU 38c.

I've done a memory test and thats come back fine.

All of the drivers are upto date, windows upto date and AMD adrenaline upto date with the latest drivers automatically.

Most of the time i can get into a game but then it falls over a few minutes or 30+ minutes. One example if playing Assasins Creed Mirage. Im at a point in the game where it causes a shutdown consistently at the same point. I've also got a similar problem in a Civ6 game where it shuts down and spins all the fans up on the whole system.

Yet things like Escape from Tarkov seem unaffected and league of legends. Fifa 25 is hit and miss. not really tried anything else yet due to the instability.

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800x (installed the same time as the GPU)
MB: Gigabyte Auros x570 elite
Memory: Vegence 3000hz 32gb
PSU: Corsair RM1000e

I shifted over from a Ryzen 9 3900x which had gone faulty.
previous GPU was 1060 6gb (stop gap card after my 3080ti died and waiting for the new AMD or the other guys releases)

Getting very similar issues on my XTX RX 9070XT with Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Crashes just far enough into a game that it gets extremely annoying... Wondering if it might be a power supply issue;I have a 750W so it shouldn't be a problem, but still...

I've got the same problem here with my 5800X3D paired with a XT Taichi by ASARock. System crashes when under moderate/high load. I thought about PSU but I've got a 1200W ATX 3.1 PSU so it should not be that the problem (HWiNFO show me up to 600W power drain for the sole GPU).

Have you checked that your fans are spinning while playing the game? I'm experiencing this issue as well, the temps aren't too bad but I noticed my fans reporting 0 rpm. They only spin on boot, and if I uninstall the drivers safely, the fans spin until the point where the current drivers are installed. Seems like dodgy drivers. I've tried all the driver versions I can get my hands on but no dice. AMD THIS NEEDS YOUR URGENT ATTENTION, MY FANS WON'T SPIN AND IT'S NOT OK

Just in case anyone finds this and has the same issue, I've reported it to AMD in case it is an issue with their drivers.

In the mean time you can download a 3rd party application called fancontrol and use that to set your fan speeds. It takes a little bit of work to understand the graphs (maybe follow a guide) but it got my fans working! I can play games now without my GPU cutting out from overheating.

I'm experiencing the same issue on my Hellhound Red devil 9070xt as well .

I just upgraded from a 5800x3D to a 9900x3D

Then went from a Sapphire Pulse 7900XT to the Hellhound Red devil 9070xt. Mainly for aesthetics.

After building everything yesterday, doing a full windows re-install, updating all drivers for everything I went to Play COD, specifically DMZ in the Warzone II engine. AN the game crashes within a couple minutes. Its also crashing when attempting to play BO6. I get a DirectX error that sometimes says "we see your GPU is set to overclocked, this can sometimes cause issues" sometimes it just says its a driver issue.

So I then loaded Delta Force and that worked fine for over 20 minutes with no issues.

I did not have any voltage spikes or dips, no performance issues when COD was crashing. In order to determine if it was GPU issue or maybe something else, I just put my 7900XT back in to make sure it wasn't something else. I was able to play DMZ for about 3 hours without a single crash.

I hope your post garners AMD's attention soon. I find myself in a similar predicament. I also have a launch-day 9070XT, which has been experiencing intermittent shutdowns characterized by a black screen, while the PC fans continue to run at full speed. These crashes are unpredictable; for instance, I can play Cyberpunk 2077 all day on Ultra settings with RTX enabled without encountering any issues, but the next day the system might crash unexpectedly.

This situation is incredibly frustrating, especially since I genuinely admire the 9070XT. However, it's disappointing to spend over $800 on a graphics card that fails to function reliably. Although XFX recommends a PSU with a minimum of 800W, I currently use an 850W PSU and have ordered a new 1000W PSU, hoping this will address the issue. If the problem persists, I may need to escalate the matter with XFX directly.

My system configuration includes:

  • CPU: Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • Motherboard: MAG X870E TOMAHAWK WIFI
  • PSU: MAG A850GL PCIE5 (850W)
  • GPU:XFX Mercury AMD Radeon RX 9070XT OC Magnetic Air Edition with RGB

I've started having this exact same issue in the last 24 hours after having had the card without the issue since launch day. I have been playing Dragon Age Veilguard just fine for 24 hours of in game play with few crashes and then suddenly in the last day I keep getting this same crash.

Out of nowhere all my screens will go black, in game sounds will continue and my controller will still vibrate but controls will not be picked up. About half the time the GPU fans will ramp up to 100% but sometimes they don't. I have waited to see if the system recovers but it never has.

Sometimes after rebooting the AMD drivers fail to load and require me to go into the windows device manager, enable the card under display adapter (it disables itself). Then I have to disable it again manually and enable it manually and the drivers then load.

It is not heat or fan related, I have been monitoring both and the card is performing as expected when it crashes. I have previously had crashes due to pushing the OC too hard and from a few in game settings that cause instability but in both cases the system recovers without the need for a restart unlike this new crash.

I have not tried other games yet. I just went through a full DDU and driver reinstall cycle to see if that can help solve the issue.

Hello guys, this could be an explication for (at least mine) crashes: Faulty chip surface ex works on a Radeon RX 9070XT, extreme hotspot temperatures and research into t...

So I have still been dealing with the issue, currently been working with AMD support(not fun).

After following all their steps I decided to run more tests with OCCT. What I'm finding is my card is getting up to 490watss or more of power consumption and is generating tons of errors. My 7900XT does not.

The high power draw and errors start when the GPU test starts even as low as 50%.

I.ve sent all my test results, screenshots and video clip to AMD and I'm just waiting on their reply. I'm hoping I can just RMA it and that will be my fix.
