6600M

Hello!

My 6600m on my MSI Alpha15 is only showing 4GB ram.

I've tried with MSI customer support to try to get some software to fix this or are there actually physically only 4GB versions of the 6600m?

Me:

"Thank you for reply.

I have just one more question/request based on the information on your site And the information on AMD offical. They too only claim 8GB.
If there are physical memory onboard the graphics card and the MSI spec only allow 4GB, is there any possibilities that I can request a new flash to use the full potential of the card."

MSI:

" We do not have such details on how AMD manufactures the RX6600M. It may be best to contact them for more details.

There is no MSI-set memory limiter in place. If one was put in place by AMD, it is presumably due to the remaining 4GB of memory being faulty or of insufficient performance."

According to TechPowerUp Specs on the RX6600M Mobile GPU chip it does suppose to have 8GB of vRAM installed: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-6600m.c3776

Run GPU-Z and see what data it has on your 6600M GPU.  It should show 8GB of vRAM. Also on the top upper right corner click on "LOOKUP" and see what GPU it shows as being installed.

GPU-Z will also show if your the AMD Driver is correctly installed.

I see that your MSI ALpha uses a Ryzen APU:

If GPU-Z is showing 8GB of vRAM for the RX6600M then the software you are using is not showing the correct amount of vRAM for your GPU card.

If GPU-Z is still showing 4GB of vRAM then you need to put in a Warranty Ticket to see if the Laptop needs to be checked or not. Because according to MSI website for your laptop it mentions that the RX6600M GPU card does indeed have 8GB of vRAM installed.

One of their replies:

"Thank you for your message.

I am afraid we will be unable to assist in that way, unfortunately. If possible at all, such firmware flash is likely to result in system instability or insufficient performance. We cannot vouch for or recommend similar processes.

The AMD website specifically states the RX6600M comes with “up to 8GB”. The existence of 4GB chips is known and widespread – it is simply a terrible error on our site that the relevant laptop model has incorrect specs listed. We again apologize greatly for this mistake."

Update on the subject

Since last I have been in contact with both AMD and MSI regarding the card and I am still waiting for a reply on my recent question below. It also ended up in MSI changing the specs on the ALPHA 15 graphichs to 4 / 8 GB instead of just 8 GB.

To summarize their replies:

AMD:
"We cannot comment on why there are 4GB variants in MSI Alpha 15 Laptop."

MSI:
"We do not have such details on how AMD manufactures the RX6600M. It may be best to contact them for more details.
There is no MSI-set memory limiter in place. If one was put in place by AMD, it is presumably due to the remaining 4GB of memory being faulty or of insufficient performance."

So I basically just asked AMD:

"Can AMD then confirm then that AMD do not care how subvendors config AMD hardware; Basically able to halve all of the parameters on a relatively new product and use its name irrespective of your grand product-specific advertising even though it might perform less than a mid-range of earlier generations.
("Featuring the ground-breaking AMD RDNA™ 2 architecture powering the new generation of AMD graphics, the AMD Radeon™ RX 6600M Mobile")

... And then leave curious and concerned customers hanging in the air?"

I do not expect to get any more answers from them...

If MSI changed the specs on the RX6000M from 8Gb to 4/8GBs does seem to indicate it is a MSI Issue and not AMD.

That change to me indicates that MSI does install 4GB RX6600M GPUs in their laptops. It is possible that AMD has a modified version of the RX6600M chip as per request of the OEM manufacturer. just guessing though.

In GPUZ select 'lookup' and see what it has to say about the graphics
