USB device opened by system

Hi,

We have a consumer USB HID class device, which is not a keyboard or mouse.

The device is supposed to opened with exclusive access by its application software.

On some late model (approx 2020 or later) Ryzen machines running Windows 10 opening the device for exclusive use fails because a system process already has it open.

I'm assuming this is related to the AMD driver for these machines as it doesn't happen on all machines.

Any ideas why this is  happening and how we can prevent it?

What does Device Manager say the USB Hardware is or its Hardware ID is?

Once you know what hardware is involve you can start troubleshooting to find out how to fix the issue.

also would be extremely helpful to know your computer set or information including Windows version and AMD Driver installed.

Thanks for you reply,

I can't reveal the specific device details here, but Windows identifies it as an "HID-compliant vendor-defined device".

On a machine that exhibits the problem the Windows version is:

Windows 20 Home 20H2 Build 19042.028

The processor is: AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS with Radeon Graphics 3.00 GHz

The only AMD driver I could find is the the AMD Radeon driver and the version is 10.20.10027.0 .

The driver information for the device is:

Device HID\VID_XXXX&PID_XXXX\7&16c5b299&0&0000 was configured.

Driver Name: input.inf
Class Guid: {745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57da}

Driver Version: 10.0.19041.1
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Section: HID_Raw_Inst.NT

Please post the exact Make & Model of your Laptop or S/N.

In Device Manager try and see if there is an error for that device.

EDIT: I jut noticed in your last reply that you do know the Hardware ID but is keeping it a secret. Since you won't divulge the hardware ID there isn't much I can do. It might not even concern AMD driver but another driver.

You have a laptop so I can't see what hardware in a laptop can be considered a secret. I am not asking what program you are using just the hardware involved.

Anyways I deleted on how to get the Hardware ID since you already have it.

Here is the system info:

I will PM you the device details.

There are no errors. The device is working properly. The issue is that a system process is holding the device open when it should not be.

The hardware device is not part of the laptop. It is an external device that is connected via USB.

Edit: It's not really a secret but the manufacturer doesn't want to discuss it publicly.

Edit2: Looks like this forum doesn't have a PM feature.

Certain Ryzen laptops open the device and make it inaccessible to our software. We have only observed this issue on some late model Ryzen machines so we assume it is somehow related to the AMD specific system software.

You realize it is difficult to troubleshoot any hardware without knowing what it is or what it does.

I have never heard of a Manufacturer wanting to keep a hardware secret from the public unless it is a Prototype/Experimental or for Military use hardware that is still being tested and doesn't want the public to know about it until it officially comes out for sale.

I guess there can be other reasons but that is the one that comes to my mind.

Anyways, Good luck and take care. I hope you are able to find the problem and is able to post it here afterwards if it concerns AMD Driver (CHIPSET or GPU).

Thanks,

I don't seem to have access to that feature.

I will PM one of the Moderators if they haven't yet seen your reply.

This happened before to another User also and the Moderator enabled that feature for the User.

It could be since you are a new User at AMD Forums.

EDIT: I must of missed your Laptop information yesterday.  Thanks for the info.
