Ubuntu 18.04 kernel 4.15.34-generic problems with 18.30 drivers

Updated to 18.30 drivers and was not able to boot. I was stuck in a loop where at times I cannot access tty2, and when I could it would show constant errors. I reinstalled the kernel 4.15.34-generic and was able to boot however, when after some random update to kernel I returned to that login loop a few days later. The kernel is still at 34-generic but no matter what I do to reinstall 34, I now have to login 33-generic in order to login.

Prior to this problem I installed 18.30 on top of 18.20 without uninstalling 18.20. I then had to purge amdgpu files then install 18.30, which is where I encountered my first loop. I'm wondering if this was the issue with 18.30 in particular or perhaps not uninstalling and then installing properly?
