When playing a game with AdaptiveSyncCompatible enabled, either a driver crash, BSoD, or game crash occurs.
This bug has been reported several times in the bug report tool since shortly after the release of the 7900XTX, but it still has not been treated as a known issue.
I tried again because a similar bug was fixed in 23.3.1, but it does not seem to be fixed in AW2721D+7900XTX.
PC Setup:
Driver: 23.3.1
OS: Windows 11 22H2, Build 22621.1265
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D 16-Core Processor
GPU: Sapphire R9 7900 XTX (MBA)
MB: Biostar X670E VALKYRIE
RAM: F5-5600J3036D16GX2-FX5
Monitor: Alienware AW2721D (G-Sync Ultimate) with DP 2560*1440@240hz@8bit
I tried new PSU and cables and still had the same issue. The issues disappeared when I swapped my old GPU back into my PC. I refunded the card and bought a 4090.
Hi Matt.
The problem is still there with the clean driver install 23.4.1 using DDU.
Only if Freesync is OFF then everything seems to be OK.
OS:
Windows 11 Pro
Version: 22H2
Build: 22621.1485
Monitor 1: Samsung Odyssey G7 - Freesync ON (latest firmware - 1016.1)
Monitor 2: Acer Nitro XV252QF - Freesync OFF or ON (tried both ways)
MB: ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate (latest BIOS 5.10)
CPU: Razen 9 5950X
RAM: 64 GB g.skill for AMD. 3600 CL 16
Video: RX 7900XTX (I cam from RTX 3090)
Tried on Games:
Quake Champions - random driver crashes or PC freez with black screen.
Tom Clancy's The Division 2 - random driver crashes or PC freez with black screen.
3Dmark - all good no issues on any of the benchamrk found so far.
UPDATE: took a long session in Tom Clancy's The Division 2 and it started crashing even with Freesync OFF.
I found the reason and completely solved the problem! the problem was in the RAM frequencies. Kingston Fury RGB 2x8 GB 3600 MHz memory. I installed the second profile at 3000 Mhz and with freesync enabled, everything works smoothly for the 3rd day
Hello @Matt_AMD sir,
23.4.1 also have this issue.

1. Enable Adaptive-Sync.
2. Launch FFXV (FINAL FANTASY XV) or Windows HDR Calibration and do calibration.

3. PC Freeze, BSOD Trigger.
PS: i don't have any issue, if i disable Adaptive-Sync.

The problem with the driver version 23.4.1 has not disappeared. Starting any game and being in it for longer than 10-15 minutes leads to a crash of the system and a restart of the computer. My system is gigabyte b450 elite + 5600x + 6600xt. Reinstalled the system, installed 23.4.1 again and the system crashes in games started again. On 23.3.1 and 23.3.2 the same thing. It functions normally only on 23.2.1
Hey sir, it seems your problem is not the same issue with the topic.
I think they are good. It is exactly the problem I have. turning off freesync helps a ton. but not 100% solves the problem. Some games still crash even with freesync off. Often thye carsh so bad that I have to do a hard reset.
I had crashes with freesync off in Division 2 and Call of Duty modern warfare II.
I start thinking tht the freesync is not the actual problem here though having it on speeds up the problem to accure.
7900 XTX with 23.4.2 driver still have this Adaptive-Stync BSOD issue.
Everything is fine after disable adaptive-sync

It's still not listed in the open issues. All they need to do is try a gsync ultimate monitor and they can reproduce it.
Did they fix EDID overrides yet? If you can override lower freesync to 30, I think that might fix it too. But they broke that on 7900 series too.
From AMD driver, the G-Sync Ultimate displays will report 1hz to 144hz or 240hz adaptive-sync range.
Yes, I think use CRU EDID to overwrite the lowest Adaptive-Sync range to maybe 30hz can fix this problem.
However, EDID is broken on RDNA3, we cannot use CRU to overwrite this value.
AMD driver can not handle appropriately when the fps drop to below 10 fps/10hz someitmes and then BSOD or system freeze happened on 7900XTX.
@Matt_AMD , sorry for tag again, just want to know if amd is deal with this issue when 7900XTX/XT connect to G-SYNC ULTIMATE monitor, such as AW3821DW or AW2721
Many thanks!
Hi Stan,
I just watched a video that said CRU is now working with these preview drivers:
https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-rad-win-23-10-01-41-vlk-extn
I could not find out how to download them
search string: "amd 23.10.01.41"
Many thanks!!
I install 23.7.1 and can use CRU to modify the lowest VRR range now.
I change the lowest VRR from 1 to 30 fps, it seems can fix some BSOD issues.
I know some people still have TDR and driver crash when enable Adaptive-Sync with G-Sync Ultimate displays.
For Example:
TDR happened when enable Adaptive-Sync w/G-SYNC ULTIMATE
1. Elden Ring
2. COD: MW2 2007
Hope AMD can fix this issue from driver side soon.
Is everything working for you now?
No!
Still have some issues (system shutdown or TDR on specific games) when enable adaptive-sync on G-Sync Ultimate monitor.
So still need AMD to release new driver to fix G-sync Ultimate monitor compatibility issue when enable Adaptive-Sync.
Only use CRU is not enough to fix the adaptive-sync issue totally.
I hope AMD still pay attention on this g-sync ultimate monitor issue.
I am sorry to hear that. The CRU workaround is working out good for me. I do not have those two games you mentioned so cannot tell what happens for me.
Could you explain what I need to do exactly to implement the fix with CRU?
You can reference this post:
https://www.displayninja.com/how-to-change-freesync-range-using-cru/
and then change the min vrr to maybe 30hz and try by yourself.
However, some games still have TDR or driver crash when enable Adaptive-Sync.
So still need AMD release offical driver to fix this issue totally.
Thank you. Since the specifications of the 3423dw say the freesync range is 48-175hz I'm gonna configure it at 48hz and see how that goes.
@Qoojo @jellemees , it seems fix by 23.7.2 totally, I will try by myself, hope AMD fix it.

I have had good results with 23.7.1 and 23.7.2 + CRU with min freesync range set to 10. Still playing around with optimal global settings, but setting chill -3 max refresh rate of monitor, seems to produce best results for me.
I am a pretty happy camper at this point. Other than captcha for every post.
Thanks for this bro. I will not update to the latest version.
I updated to latest and still Crashed in call of duty it is mainly 1 multiplayer map that makes me crash atm which is Hydro Electric lol and considering i play ranked alot it is annoying. I crashed last night in the countdown, once again don't use any syncs or any amd settings and it still bsods
Report:
7900 XTX with 23.4.3 driver still have this Adaptive-Stync BSOD issue.
This issue is gone after disable Adaptive-Sync.

Well, never enable what AMD set it default disable.
Just let it all default and play the game.
Anyone here still experiencing BSOD: DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION on latest driver, when adaptivesynccompatible is on?
Yes.
To be honest I feel a bit stupid now.
I have played a couple of days with the card. Every game was crashing. Turning off freesync seemd to help in the first palce but then it started crashing even with freesync off.
Then I decided to swap the PCI-E cables in my PSU (Phanteks Revolt X 1200w) to different ports on PSU and all problems seems like magically disapeared. (I also have removed AMD RGB software fot this card).
Second day no crashes even with FreeSync ON! (fingers crossed).
@Matt_AMD
UPDATE: just remembered that I also replaced DP cable!
Sometimes it's just that simple.
Glad to hear you resolve your problem!
Hope the next driver can fix OP and my issue...
want to play games with adaptive-sync.
I have this exact same issue when Playing Call of Duty MWII, It is the only game that causes it to crash, I don't have any syncs on (free, v ect..)
DCP_Watchdog_Violation and in the memory dump the Image name is amdkmdag.sys
it has happened since season 2 came out on cod I also had a gpu update at that time and a windows update. I tried to downgrade driver version but It didn't fix the issue, I also tried clean boot of win 11 but it hasn't fixed it either,
same card too RX 570 4gb, Tried turning off c-states control in core performance boost settings and ram xmp, sfc /scan now.. , literally everything google has said also went on a microsoft chat but it was useless as the person didn't know either..
I have been through more games before i crash now but sometimes on certain maps but it's not easily to just reproduce the crash its just when I play call of duty mwII In any mode at a random time, sometimes mid way sometimes at the beginning, the only thing that has made it crash less frequently was turning down all my graphics settings but considering it still crashes im not sure if it is mainly a certain setting or if It wouldn't make a difference and maybe I was just hoping I had reduced the issue. updating gpu driver to 23.4.2 now and seeing if that helps at all.
Any advice would be appreaciated
Same bro, I get shadowbanned last time because of that, they thought im always quitting mid match, it always crashes around 6th circle on BR mode, already have my account back though. That's why right now im running 22.11.2 version of driver, because as of now they didn't fixed this issue. Already send report to them on "Bug report tool" but still its not fixed.
so 22.11.2 doesn't cause the game to crash?
I have this exact same issue when Playing Call of Duty MWII
did you find a fix?
just roll back to 22.11.2 version bro. Its running fine on wz2 for me.
Can't do that for 7900
Hello all,
I have been having this "driver timeout" issue, but literally and virtually ONLY for playing World of Warcraft... I've done everything from reinstalling Windows, DDU the drivers for RX 7900 XTX, messing with XMP, flashing BIOS, nothing seems to help. Came across a thread somewhere where AMD acknowledged that there is issues with AMD FreeSync that they are aware of and working on that causes driver timeout issues and other things while playing games with high refresh rate displays. Please review the following thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/10aumlr/comment/j96o2yd/?context=3
They initially believed it to be fixed in 23.3.1 but it is indeed not, not even with 23.4.2.
I am using the following:
AMD 7700X Processor
32 GB G-Skill Trident RAM DDR5-4800
ASRock PG Lightning X670e Motherboard
AMD RX 7900 XTX 24GB GPU (Reference Model)
Windows 11 (latest build and all latest Windows Updates)
I am personally getting frustrated with no longer wanting to play World of Warcraft because of driver timeout issues. This supposedly doesn't happen with AMD FreeSync turned on.... I'm disabling it now to give it a shot to confirm, but I'm not optimistic about this. I've submitted about 20 bug reports at this point for the exact same thing. I'll be playing and randomly my PC will whir and then quiet a bit, screen will go black / lose input, but it comes right back on with WoW still running and all - sound will eventually re-establish mid-game, and things will continue, with the AMD bug tracker asking me if I want to report in the background. The machine doesn't lock up completely or need to be rebooted, but it is VERY disruptive to the game, and this shouldn't be happening for this long. This has happened since I've had this GPU in December, and I feel like we're being ignored. Can someone please let me know if there's any info from the Zip file that I might be able to post from my recent crash this morning with FreeSync enabled to determine the issue?
PS - I play about 15-16 other games and WoW is the ONLY one it happens in.
Thanks!
Jonohue
Please see this following post as well for more information.
I'm hoping this might help the AMD team / driver team / community as a whole.
Thanks!
Jonohue
try a driver Before 2023 like 22.12.2
see if it solves your issue
try 22.12.2 or the previous as thats the last one in 2022 which is same as for version 22.11.2 for the rx570 both out in the same month just different dates, Just an idea or if you never deleted the old drivers off your pc they may be in your amd folder still
