Driver Crash?

Hey all! Been having this issue ever since I got my XFX 6950XT and it only occurs guaranteed with one game, and only happened twice with another game.

The game that guaranteed crashes, is PlanetSide 2. I will login and my GPU starts to wind up like I uncapped my FPS in a menu, which I have it capped at my monitors refresh rate (144hz). I'll run around for about 10 minutes or so, then out of nowhere my monitor will turn black. The PC will stay on, but I can't get any video back. Motherboard will throw a white, VGA light, suggesting something is up with my graphics card/it crashed. I've tried a bunch of different things to try and solve it, from DDU to a complete and total windows reinstall. A friend who has the same exact issue, with a 6900XT, fixed it by changing his OS to Linux and it worked totally fine. The other game, was 7 Days to Die, and it only happened twice and didn't happen for the rest of the playthrough I did.

Other than that, I can play a all my other games completely fine, without issue. Destiny 2, Darktide, ArmA 3, MechWarrior Online, etc.. Every game in my library is playable without issue, except for PlanetSide 2.

Which is where I'm completely and totally stumped, my GPU is clearly crashing. I want to point the finger at PlanetSide 2, since it seems to be contained to that game only. The only solution we had, was to completely change to Linux, but I really don't want to do that just to play one game. If anyone has any possible ideas, feel free to share. Thanks!

Try disabling MPO. You could also try disabling XMP in BIOS since you are running way past the recommended frequency for that CPU. It could also just be a power spike since the transients on modern cards can far exceed the power they typically draw. Other than that, it sounds like an issue with Planet Side 2.

You could also try different driver versions. Sometimes specific drivers don't play nice with specific games.

Ryzen 7 7800X3D, ASUS ROG STRIX B650E-F GAMING WIFI, G.SKILL TRIDENT Z NEO 2x16GB DDR5 DRAM 6000MT/s CL30, AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX, LIAN LI EDGE 1300, Corsair MP600 PRO NH 4TB

Gotcha, thanks for the speedy reply. Will give that a shot here later tonight. I remember when I built the PC, I had to lower the frequency on the RAM to get it to work properly because I was unaware that it doesn't like anything over 3200MHz. I believe currently, it is running at what AMD recommends, 4x2R @ 2667Mhz.

Alright, I tried disabling MPO, and then booted up PlanetSide, but that has also not worked. Like usual, standing around in game, my fans started to go up to their max fan speed and stay there, like it was really under load. I tried disabling Anti-Aliasing and that stopped my fans from doing that. But, after about 10-15 minutes, I had the crash happen, but this time, the fans went from normal speed to like, past max speed the instant my monitor went black. It would not stop until I powered the PC down.

Because of the VGA light, I am slightly leaning toward a hardware fault.

If it is a hardware fault, probably look at upgrading to a 7900 series. But first I might try upgrading my PSU to something 1000W+ before I go replacing something that expensive and all of the other things you suggested to try.

I have a 7900XTX and a 7900X3D. I recently updated my graphics drivers (24.1.1) because the older driver set I was using was crashing on a different game (Albion). However, once I upgraded it started causing me crashing problems on Planetside 2.
Driver 23.9.3 or 23.9.1 (I can't remember which one I had before) was working perfectly fine with Planetside 2.
I was also having consistent crashing problems on FFXIV. To fix that I had to use Vulkan for DX11.

It's disappointing to see that there are all these driver crashes and bugs with the AMD cards over various different games, I don't want to be having to change my drivers around every time I want to play a particular game, it is quite frustrating for sure, especially being a long time investor and finally fully making the jump over to AMD, after fully experiencing it there is definitely at lot more nuisances than I was anticipating. With that being said, when the games are working and not crashing I absolutely love my purchase it's a beast and can handle anything that I throw at it.
