I have a home built PC - Gigabyte gigabyte b450m ds3h motherboard with AMD Ryzen 3 2200G with Radeon Vega 8 Graphics.

I have the latest Vega 8 graphics driver installed dated August 2023..

Tests indicate that this setup is HEVC compliant. Running DXVA checker produces the results below.

However I am not able to play HEVC content in the latest Chrome build which has been HEVC compliant for some time.

When I drop an HEVC video into the browser I just get a black playback screen as the counter counts down. Any tips for me to get this to work?

first try disabling all of your Chrome browser extensions in case one of them is blocking the video from showing.

If it still is not showing any video then go back and enable all your chrome extensions again.

Try downloading a Audio/Video Codec package to your PC. It is possible you don't have the codec in your PC to run HEVC videos.

I am using K-Lite Codecs for my computer. you can download it from here: K-Lite Codec Pack 

Check your Chrome settings that you are able to watch HEVC videos in Chrome. Try using MS EDGE browser and see if it work there. If it does then most likely it is a Chrome setting that you need to configure.

Try running HEVC videos using an external Video player like PowerDVD or Blu-Ray Player as an example. See if it works.

But first install the Audio/Video Codec package to make sure your computer has all the codec to watch and hear Audio/Video files.

Tried disabling extensions.

Tried using the Klite codec pack. Neither worked.

Does not work in Edge.

Video does play using VLC media player but do need it to work in Chrome.

Okay if it works in VLC than that means your computer can play HEVC videos.

Googling "How to run HVEC Videos on Chrome" found several hits including one that says the Chrome has enabled HVEC to play in the browser.

HEVC/H.265 player plugin for Google Chrome

The H.265 / HEVC video player plugin for Google Chrome is now available. The preview release enables viewing High Efficiency Video files  in Chrome. HEVC file format is Matroska mkv. All operating systems are supported.

Changes:
– Always scale video to fit plugin element
– Fullscreen can also be toggled through button now
– Support resizing video

The H.265 / HEVC video player in Google play store is no longer supported  because Chrome has HEVC already enabled in current versions.

The Chrome web store search brought up nothing for HEVC or h265.

Each time I Google about this the answer is the same and that is HEVC is now native to Chrome and will work if the underlying system is capable of playing HEVC.

Still scratching my head!!

I suggest you open a thread at CHROME FORUMS and asked them there. Because the problem seems to be your Chrome Browser or possibly Windows: https://support.google.com/chrome/community?hl=en

Run in a elevated Command Prompt or Powershell the following simple command line : SFC /scannow

This will verify your Windows OS on your PC. You can Copy & Paste command to Command Prompt or Powershell if your want.

Enabling hardware acceleration in Chrome and restarting the browser fixed the problem!!

Great, kinda weird that Hardware Acceleration actually fixed a problem rather than create a problem playing videos.

Most of the time Users need to disable Hardware Acceleration in the browsers to get proper video playing.

Anyways, mark your last reply as the "Solution" so other will know the how your solved your video issue in Chrome.
