I have my issue solved.
When yesterday I installed Adrenaline (driver only I think) and the screen turned black I waited about 10 minutes without pressing any buttons or moving the mouse. I think that Windows keeps running normally in the background even though there is no display shown. My thought was to let Adrenaline finish installing and then when I presumed it to be finished (screen turned black around 70% so nearly finished) I pressed the space bar. Apparently this accepted a prompt from Adrenaline and the computer rebooted. There was no display but I turned my PC off and even unplugged it.
When I returned a day later, I saw in device manager that there was a 'AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT' under my display adapters instead of 'Basic Display Adapter'. I quickly made a system restore point and successfully got Adrenaline 23.7.1 installed. I installed it the second time with full options so no minimal or driver only install.
I'm not certain that the above described solved my issue. Maybe Windows randomly decided to install the correct driver. I'm running Windows 11 Pro 22H2 and have a Power Color AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics card. The driver version in device managers reports 31.0.21001.45002 according to the website of AMD this is Adrenaline version 23.7.1.
