Adrenalin 2020 / 19.12.2 broke HDR on my RX 5700 XT again

So, installed the Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 / 19.12.2 drivers and thought everything was working fine at first.

On desktop, Windows has HDR enabled, monitor is in DisplayPort HDR -mode, HDR videos work etc.

However, as soon as I started first game the problems became apparent.

Overwatch, which is SDR game, for whatever reason runs the monitor in DisplayPort HDR mode in fullscreen mode, but it used to look just fine on earlier drivers (since the HDR got finally fixed in 19.10.1 or whenever it was). Now, it's all washed out and a bit darker.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, which is HDR game, was really, really dark. Toggling HDR off/on just made the screen freak out with overblown brightness (to the point almost everything burns through). The problem persists until a reboot.

Star Wars: Battlefront II, which is HDR game, wasn't dark, but instead it was overbright from the beginning, and again, problem persists until reboot.

I tried doing clean install with the new drivers, no help. Clean installing the previous set I used (19.10.2 I think) fixed things, but now I'm missing everything new in 2020.

More  or less the same on my rig.

Two ongoing errors, both in plain windows and in games, has forces me to downgrade my drivers to 19.12.1 which is the driver I have the least problem with.

      1. Washed out colors and too dark when selecting HDR.

      2. Overblown brightness close to burning out everything on screen.

This happens regardless of enabling/disabling HDR in windows.

Running monitor in Freesync 2 or Freesync still causes the same issues.

Affected games I have tried:

Ghost Recon Breakpoint

The Division 2

Anno 1800

Halo Wars 2

Star Wars - Jedi Fallen Knight

Red Dead Redemption 2

Clean install did not help either, back to 19.12.1

Yeah, I'm having the same issue.  I have since reverted back to the previous driver.

I have a 5700XT and the 27" Samsung CHG70 as well.  Interesting multiple people have this monitor although I do see a BenQ mentioned above.

I will mention the readme says the HDR colors can be a problem if image sharpening is enabled.  So, I disabled this feature.  The Samsung monitor has a two Freesync modes, enhanced and standard.  With image sharpening disabled, the enhanced freesync still has the problem.  Leaving the game the colors are still washed out so bad you have to reboot (only way I know to resolve this that I'm aware of).  If you put the monitor in standard freesync, the game looks slightly dark compared to normal.  But, now when you go back to desktop everything looks normal so disabling image sharpening helped a bit.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Chris Smith

19.12.3 brings no improvement

19.12.3 - Sadly it lacked a lot, HDR too dark ingame (Ghost Recon Breakpoint), burned out in windows.

On a positive note thou, HDR in Star Wars Jedi Fallen Knight seemed to work very well.

Going back to Win10-Radeon-Software-Adrenalin-2019-Edition-19.12.1-Dec2

I also have had the same issue with 19.12.2 & .3
I first noticed it when I booted up No Man's Sky and everything washed out.
This thread has saved me pulling my hair out trying to change all my settings.
I've rolled back my drivers for Radeon back to 19.12.1 and it all seems to be working fine again.

My PC is as below:
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X 16-Core Processor (32 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX Vega 64 8GB OC Edition
Gigabyte X399 AORUS Gaming 7 TR4 ATX
G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR4 3200Mhz
Samsung 970 EVO 500GB NVMe 1.3 M.2 (2280) 3D V-NAND SSD
ST6000DM003-2CY186
ST2000DM001-9YN164

Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.1.1 -drivers fixed all the HDR/SDR-issues I had, so at least I'll recommend installing these

I posted the below as a response to another thread but it's still

applicable to this so I'll post it here too. I have had to go back to

the drivers prior to the Adrenaline 2020 release of drivers.

Yeah, this is pretty much what I'm seeing.

I'm pretty much a one game guy. I'm playing Battlefield 5. It uses the

Frostbite engine which drives Star Wars Battlefront which you

mentioned below. So, I'm not shocked you are seeing issue(s).

I have a 5700 XT and a Samsung CHG70 27" monitor. I had no issues with

the Vega 64 and this monitor. I'm really beginning to wish I had not

upgraded my vid card.

For me, the latest 2020 Adrenaline drivers are better than the last

versions (I'm forgetting the version numbers so bear with me). With

the previous version, I couldn't play the game with everything enabled

(HDR, Freesync, etc..). With this new driver, if the Freesync mode of

the monitor is set to Enhanced, then BF5's screen is VERY dark.

The good news is if I set the monitor's Freesync to Standard Engine,

then the game comes up and plays just fine while looking great. Bad

news the game crashes after 10-15 minutes of playing and typically

heads back to the desktop if I'm lucky. Sometimes the monitor stays

black and you can see it going in/out of display port requiring me to

perform a power cycle of my system.

I have since gone back to using the drivers prior to the Adrenalin

2020 release (these are driver 20.12.1, right?). I am now back to

where I was before: the game plays fine regardless of what Freesync

mode the monitor is in. However, if I let the monitor go to sleep

after 10 minutes of inactivity and then play a game, the monitor

flashes display port mode over and over.

So, for me the newest 2020 driver has made substantial progress but

still needs work. We all need to report this to AMD.

If AMD doesn't how they can fix this issue and soon, then I'll head

back to Nvidia. Rumors are circulating Nvidia's new cards are going to

be introduced in March. I know that doesn't mean they will be

released, but my personal exodus back to Nvidia maybe happening soon.

The ball is in your court AMD.

Correction, these didn't fix all the HDR/SDR-issues I had.

SDR games seem to be working fine.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice requires alt+tab to Windows and back but after that HDR seems to work

Star Wars: Battlefront II is broken. The display says it's in DisplayPort HDR -mode, but the image is washed out and dimmer than it should, alt+tabbing, switching hdr on/off, windowed etc doesn't help. Going borderless windowed makes it in fact so dark you can barely see anything

I'm still with the problem using 20.1.1, back to the 19.12.1... Again

It may not work with every configuration of Windows 10 and Radeon RX cards, but it sure works for mine.  I have the latest driver:  20.3.1.

I had exactly the same problem with my RX580.  However, I've solved it by just turning off Windows 10 HDR.  Now there's no problem with Hellblade, Lone Echo, Contrast or any other game.  Windows Snip & Sketch works properly again instead of a black screen for two seconds.

No problem with or without Enhanced Sync, Instant Replay or anything else yet, but more experimentation in progress.

Graphics Card: RX580; CPU: 6-core i7-7800X (overclocked 22%); MoBo: Asus Prime X299-A; System Drive - WD Blue SN 550 500GB NVMe SSD on PCIe socket; Memory: 32Gb CorsVengLPX DDR4 3000 C15; Gigabyte 650W PSU;
