24.12.1 Is broken. Adrenaline boot time is x3 times longer and Game Profiles do NOT work.

This issue is literally the same verbatim as the one that got introduced with 24.10.1. I actually opened a similar post to this one on Reddit for 24.10.1 which got the attention of HUNDREDS of users, including AMD's own representative: @AMD-Vik's.

-- (This is the Reddit thread in question) -- (This is AMD-Vik's response in said thread aknowledging these issues) --

System information is listed at the bottom.
________________________________________________________________

There exist TWO MAJOR ITEMS that make the use of 24.12.1 impossible for me:

>1.) AMD Adrenalin Software takes up to 1 minute and 15 seconds (counting system uptime) to just show up on the taskbar upon System Startup, and another 5-10 seconds to open up when double clicked.

You may think "Well, one minute really isn't the end of the world, are you really complaining about that?".

This Adrenalin startup time has multiplied by -3- compared to 24.3.1, which started up Adrenaline in merely 28-30 seconds (again, counting System Uptime on Task Manager) and was overall a perfectly stable and flawless driver.

>2.) Game Profiles DO NOT work AT ALL, unless you manually open the Adrenalin suite first.

I will try to explan this situation in a concise way:

1. You press the power button and your computer starts up.
2. Windows loads, everything loads. (Including waiting 1:15min for Adrenaline to even show up, indicating it has been started)
3. Only then you go and open your desired videogame, for which you have a Game Profile set up in Adrenalin (say, a profile that turns on the GPU fans or changes any desired Tuning values such as Core Frequency or whatever.)

4. Game opens, but your Adrenalin Game Profile has not loaded.

Now, if you repeat this, but manually opening Adrenalin (as in, opening the software itself) BEFORE opening the game, THEN Game Profiles will work properly.

-----

I am really sad to see that none of these issues have been aknowledged on the 24.12.1 Release Notes even though someone at AMD literally aknowledged and admitted they'd have to investigate them further.

Obviously this cannot be intended behavior. I really don't hope AMD expects users to wait 1:20minutes just for the GPU software to initialize, and then having to open it manually just for one of the most important features to work.

This is utterly unacceptable. I really like what Adrenalin has to offer compared to the competition, but if the price is to accept that the most relevant features do not work as intended and that AMD refuses to aknowledge said issues publicly it only reinforces my intentions of not continuing to buy AMD anymore.

Please, I beg you, aknowledge these issues once and for all. I don't understand why I have to remain on a half-year old driver for my $550 GPU features to just work properly.

Hello everyone. This isn't a final solution per-se, as the issue seems to be inherent to Adrenalin itself.

However, me and another user have managed to make Adrenalin launch earlier using different methods that work just fine and that now allows us to use 24.12.1 properly.

The thread below presents a discussion about the topic that gives a good insight on the issue at hand, and the findings on how to make Adrenaline initialize at a reasonable time with working features:

Only 15-20 sec. to open for me on cold start, I do not have it force start with windows startup.

Do you have other apps (windows, 3rd party) added, besides games.

When was the last time you clean installed or factory reset (not keep settings) a driver install.

Checked/repaired OS with SFC and/or DISM commands.

I have nothing on Windows Startup. This Windows 10 Pro install is 4 months old. It is the cleanest a Windows 10 install can humanly be.

I tried on a separate clean install on a different SSD and the issue is identical.

I always utilize AMD Cleanup Utility for Driver updates.

I have the same problem, is not only you. Also, with RSR and AFMF 2 when you exit a game, the game doesn't close and keeps running. In Adrenaline it still looks like you are playing that game, you have to kill the process from the task manager.

Hi! I replied to the topic you created yesterday regarding this topic

same issues and this driver which is already old from when it was made, has several AAA title releases that it doesnt recognize so no profile management.....Nvidia had game ready drivers out before the games released....and i have their flag ship that is near worthless without good drivers ( 7900xtx )...i have all the issues you mention and then some...for my 24.8 loads faster and is more stable but doesnt like space marines 2......

we got to pull for the intel B780 rumors to be as true as the B580 were, if so since AMD has ceded the high ground to Nvidia, publicly stating they arent gonna have a product for the high end. They are counting on the mid range...if the B780 arrives at $500 with its 45% improvement over AMD in ray tracing....we got ourselves a 3 way race....it will cut directly into AMDs planned market retreat area (  they admitted defeat to nvidia by not even trying to release a competitive card ) and force them to support their products better while giving us a 3rd option, WE WIN....pray the leaks are true......

Hi, You have BIOS version 4401 which more than one year old.

The latest BIOS version is 4622 about a month old and I suggest that You install the latest BIOS ver.

It is important for certain security fixes as well as performance/stability improvements and if You are lucky the problem You are having might also be gone.

https://www.asus.com/se/motherboards-components/motherboards/prime/prime-b450m-a-ii/helpdesk_bios?mo...

After that I strongly suggest that You also download and install the latest Chipset drivers for various bug fixes and restart the computer:

https://www.amd.com/en/support/download/drivers.html

Chipsets > AM4  > B450 => latest Chipsets is 6.10.17.152 Release Date 2024-10-21

Hey. I was aware I was not on the latest BIOS. I only read this message now. Last 48 hours I did what you wrote up there anyway, to no avail.

I updated BIOS, I reinstalled Windows from scratch (for a second time regarding this issue), installed latest Chipset drivers.

But nope. The slow start and profiles not working until manual initialization goes back to 24.7.1 and upwards, at least on my configuration.

I tried:

24.12.1 - Slow start time issue
24.10.1- Slow start time issue
24.9.1- Slow start time issue
24.8.1- Slow start time  issue
24.7.1- Slow start time issue
24.5.1 - NORMAL START TIME
24.3.1 - NORMAL START TIME

I didn't try 24.6.1 just because I didn't feel like it honestly, but the slow start issue was introduced sometime after/during half this 2024. It is an Adrenalin issue and I'm ignorant as whether it happens with this specific combination of hardware only or what.

Anyway, this is the most hassle I've gone just to try and pinpoint why a stupid driver suite for my graphics card isn't working as intended. There isn't more beating around the bush anymore. I'm staying on 24.3.1 and next year I'll sell this card somewhere and buy NVIDIA. And I really wish I hadn't to.

I have the slow start time issue also. It happens with both 23H2 and 24H2 Windows 11 versions.

Every driver up to 24.5.1 has normal start time. 24.6.1 and newer drivers has slow start time.

Seems like something went wrong when driver version moved from 23.XX.XX.XX branch to

24.XX.XX.XX branch.

24.5.1 Driver Version 23.40.33.01 was latest driver from 23 Branch.

24.6.1 Driver Version 24.10.21.01 started the 24 Branch.

Idle Power Draw has also gone higher. For example with 24.12.1 driver idle power is about 25 Watts with 700 mV Voltage. 24.5.1 idles at 10 Watts with 70 mV Voltage.

So, all Drivers up to 24.5.1 works correctly. Driver versions 24.6.1, 24.7.1, 24.8.1, 24.9.1, 24.10.1, 24.12.1 & All AFMF2 Preview drivers has slow start time.

My PC Specs:

Sapphire Pulse RX 7900 XT

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D

MSI Tomahawk B450 Max II (Latest Bios + latest chipset driver)

2x16GB 3600 MHz DDR4

Aorus FI27Q-P 2560x1440 165 Hz

Windows 11

P.S. Luckily Indiana Jones and the Great Circle works well with Radeon Software 24.5.1.

Even though we both are suffering the same issue...

Ah it just makes me so happy to see I'm not alone and that someone else has also tried to troubleshoot this the same way as I did. Yes, it's exactly as you said.

All drivers past mid-2024 suffer from the slow start issue. Other people say it initializes just fine for them.

I even tried to go and see if the Task Scheduler tasks set for each of the drivers were different in any way, but no, everything seems to be completely identical, and the issue is reproducible with a clean install of Windows (W10 on my case) with nothing else but Chipset drivers installed, with everything updated, from BIOS, Windows to any of the crucial hardware drivers.

It's an issue inherent to the drivers and there doesn't seem to be anything user-side we can do to remediate it other than just waiting and hoping they fix it over time, somehow.

@AMD-Vik replied to me on Reddit and said that they measured a Delta of +20 seconds on Start time which they managed to reduce from 24.10 to 24.12, and that the issue shouldn't be there anymore. But it CLEARLY is still there, at least for certain hardware configurations...

Same issue on 24.12.1 as I had on 24.10.1. Takes over 1 min after startup for adrenalin to show up in the system tray and takes ~30 seconds to open the dashboard after double clicking the shortcut in my start menu or on my desktop. I’ve uninstalled/reinstalled with amd cleanup utility several times. On the latest windows 11 24H2 build. Running a 7950x chip and 7900XTX card (reference card). I’ve given up on a fast starting Adrenalin app.

Also still takes over 1 min to log into world of Warcraft the first time after a driver reinstall/update. That’s been happening as long as I’ve been on this amd system. I’m no expert or pc builder, it’s a prebuilt. I don’t know or care to know about this stuff but just like when it works as intended.

Hi, the reason it takes a minute for the icon to appear is because of this I discovered yesterday: https://community.amd.com/t5/pc-drivers-software/investigating-the-reason-for-the-slow-start-up-of-a... and can be solved by modifying a value in a registry entry.

Nice find!

I checked what is the Initdelay in Registry with 24.5.1. It has 20 Seconds.

24.12.1 Initdelay is indeed 60 seconds.

That just makes me wonder why, oh why is the delay made longer with newer drivers. I tried as low as 10 second delay with both drivers which didint cause any issues at Windows bootup. I don't know if even 0 delay causes problems.

It makes things even more weird if other users has low delay and others high after Driver install. What the heck is going on?

Thank you for your findings! This should make thinghs at least a bit clearler.

Interesting, the 60 seconds seems to be for everyone, not specific to laptop or computer. Thanks for sharing!

Hi, I have the same value (60) and I don't have any problems what so ever with Adrenalin s/w 24.12.1 or any s/w version before that. So it is indeed very strange that there are issues with other peoples h/w and O/S.

I list my specs below.

Adrenalin 24.12.1_60sec.PNG

My rig:

Windows 10 Pro
GPU: ASUS TUF GAMING Radeon™ RX 6900 XT
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3950X

Memory: Corsair VENGEANCE® RGB RT 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 DRAM 3200MHz C16 (1.2V)

Extended monitor setup:
- primary AORUS-FI27Q 2560x1440 (16:9) 144 Hz (Bordeless window in all games)
- secondary Philips IPS 1920x1200 (16:10)

Chassis: Fractal Design Define 7 with 6 140mm fans:
- Intake one at bottom, two at front.
- Outblow: two on top and one at rear.

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15-Se AM4 (two 140mm fans).
PSU: Corsair RM850X 850W 80 Plus Gold certified.

Storage:
- M2 Samsung 980 Pro 2TB NWME
- SSD Samsung 950 Pro 1 TB SATA
- BPX M2 NWME 480GB

Mouse: Logitech Gaming mouse MX518

On my secondary (right side monitor) I have this to keep track of temps and loads from GPU/CPU with FPSmonitor and Core Temp:

GPU_CPU_Temp and load.PNG

Best regards from Sweden

[Edit] Btw, cool and quiet gaming while usually at ultra settings in games 2560x1440 @ AMD Radeon Chill Min/Max settings at 75 FPS.
AMD Freesync Premium and SAM enabled and all other settings in Adraline s/w Disabled.
GPU & CPU temp seldom above 65C degrees regardless any game including:
Cyberpunk 2077, Assassins Creed Valhalla/Odyssey/Origins/Unity, Far Cry 4,5,6, Primal, GTA V, Red Dead Redemption2, Ghost Recon - Wildlands/Breakpoint, Maffia 1,2,3, Deus Ex Mankind, Metro 2033 Redux/Last Light Redux, MassEffect Legandary Edition, Battlefield 3,4,5, Hardline.

Thanks for contributing. It is indeed one of the strangest issues I've ever seen.

@Aker666 quoting you in case you are interested.

Hi, thanks for your information. I have the same values as you except for InitDelay which I have set to zero.

My problems started after 24.5.1 if I remember correctly, that's when the startup started to be slow and until now. Whenever I install the drivers I always do a factory reset and tell it to restore my user profile. The only strange thing is that when I finish the installation it doesn't ask me to restart the laptop.

I have a Lenovo Legion 7 Gen 7 AMD Advantage (2022) with a Ryzen 9 6900HX and a RX 6850M XT, so I don't think there is a more compatible laptop from AMD than this. Also I can't OC or undervolt, so I have everything as it is from the factory.

Regards.
