RDNA 4 Emerges! AMD Unveils Red-Hot Radeon RX 9000 GPUs With Big AI Focus

At CES 2025, AMD has taken the wraps off its next-gen graphics cards, the Radeon RX 9000 series, replete with a revamped performance architecture.

Yes, I want one of these!Yes, I want one of these!

AMD’s highly anticipated RDNA 4 graphics cards will launch soon, headed by Radeon RX 9070 and Radeon RX 9070 XT GPUs, the company announced at CES 2025. The new RDNA 4 graphics architecture has several improvements, according to the chip maker, including faster graphics performance, more powerful AI processing, and AMD’s third-generation ray-tracing accelerators. It isn’t yet clear how these GPUs will stack up against Nvidia's inevitable GeForce RTX competition when these new Radeons drop during AMD's vague timeline of "Q1 2025," but you can be sure the next few months will be exciting as we discover more about them, and what they're up against.

If you’re familiar with AMD’s existing graphics cards, the first thing you likely noticed is that the number scheme here is slightly different. You may even think I've typed it wrong. This is because AMD has traditionally used the hundreds digit to differentiate its graphics cards, like the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT versus the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT. That stops here, however, and for the time being, AMD will instead use the tens digits for this purpose, similar to what Nvidia does.

Did you notice the 'Big Al' focus in the title?  Somebody likes me up there.

I wonder if nvidia trademarked/copyrighted 5070/5080/... all the way up to 8xxx, but never got to 9000s.

Don't know, but it's interesting in the realignment of the numbering sequences.

NVIDIA in 2030: We are proud to present the amazing 9070!

User: Bro, I already have it since 2025. Old tech now....

It just hit me that I think intel stopped with the numbers only (...,80387, 80487) due to copyright/trademark issues and changed to names like pentium.

I do think it is a bit silly they went with the name change, however I do feel like it will be a bit easier for those switching from Nvidia to find the right tier card they are looking for. Like @johnnyenglish pointed out, it will be wild to see if Nvidia releases a 90X0 series in the future.

Well... First 3Dmark leaks got online.

Looks like it beats both 7900XT (by some margin) and 4080 super (barely)

Am I the one wishing for a "Ace Up Your Sleeve" move?

They could definitely make a smashing hit like the 6950XT but the question is:

Does it prints money for the company? Maybe not...

You know, I never pay any attention to the performance ratings between Nvidia and AMD.  You have to look into the coding of the software.  For decades they would code crap to cause problems for the AMD GPU's where Nvidia perhaps had a copyright on a specific feature or whatever.

Never trust the promotional hype of either product.  You can't trust them.

It's kind of like statistics; "Statistics don't lie, but liars use statistics".

Anyone know what the 1 2-fan card is?

Probably the 9060

Thanks!

AMD should like, work with us to bring FSR 4 and their Neural Supersampling and Denoising for Real-time Path Tracing to Portal 2 with RTX, lol
I definitely think it would make a great showcase of RDNA 4

How exactly would they work with us on that idea?  Asking for a friend...

As Albert Einstein said, "I could have done so much more with a Big Al's Computer!".

Well, as you know Portal with RTX launched in 2022 and was a disaster in terms of compatibility with other GPUs which led to lots of negative feedback, we're wanting to prevent that same situation.

I'll first state NVIDIA has no involvement with development, they may promote the remaster since it is based off their technology but other than that this is a community remaster like Half-Life 2 RTX.

Another thing is we're not using their branch of Remix, Portal 2 is very shader reliant so it needed some reverse engineering which was done by Xoxor who is working with us as well for things like feature improvements and getting everything ready for release, so we can make changes for things like FSR to our branch and we have an internal one we can give access to AMD.

The reason we ask for AMD's help is because our team is mostly comprised of 3D artists since Portal 2 is an already finished game and Xoxor is busy with optimizations and isn't experienced with AMD technologies like FSR, I'm also hoping with AMD's involvement they can implement technologies like FSR 4 and Neural Supersampling and Denoising ahead of time as these technologies aren't out yet

How does this benefit AMD? It showcases their technology in a remaster for a widely loved classic game, we would also promote RDNA 4 and FSR 4 in our personal trailers which would sell their GPUs and show that they can offer a RT experience comparable to NVIDIA.

Essentially we're offering AMD to be a part of this remaster and provide their users with the features needed to enjoy it to it's full extent and show that Remix is for all.

For nVidia having no involvement with development it is named "with RTX" and include nVidia technologies like DLSS. It seemed an nVidia proof of concept title.

I played about 1/3 of the way through it with my 7000 series Radeon card, which was very playable, however the graphical enhancements over the original did not seem to warrant the huge performance hit.

Disappointed AMD didn't officially unveil the 9000 series at CES, but I'm still excited to see what they'll be offering and if what Mr. Jack said wasn't only "Coach speak". Really hoping they bring amazing performance and pricing to the mainstream and budget-ish segment. Very curious to see the RX 9070 XT and 9070 in action.

I'm waiting on the RX 9070 XT; probably available in March 2025.

Now that the results are in for the nvidia 5xxx series, it seems very possible for AMD to compete with the extremely lackluster 5070 - 5070 ti - 5080 cards. It's been a very long time since nvidia has released such an underwhelming next gen offering. But nvidia stuck to their anti-consumer guns. Can you imagine the nerve and hubris to stand in front of that crowd and say 5070 has 4090 performance, given the benchmark results of 5080?

It seems entirely possible for AMD to design and release a competitive 9080. Not sure there is any real point to spend time and effort on that, given the minor performance increase.

It hasn't really been all that long since NVidia had an underwhelming next gen offering.  The RTX 2000 series was only 6.5 years ago and that didn't move the needle at all it terms of raster price/performance.

That was incidentally when AMD was moving away from a unified architecture (GCN) to a split one (RDNA, CDNA) and didn't field high end GPUs with the RX 5000 series.

Same thing again now that AMD is going back to a unified architecture.

Ok, these new GPUs will be available on 06 March 2025, and the retail price for the RX 9070 is $549 USD, while the retail price for the RX 9070 XT is $599 USD.  Quite a bargain given the prices of the Nvidia 5000 series GPUs.  Also, an overclocked RX 9070 XT OC will be come out for even more money, but also more performance.  I think AMD is making the right move here to keep the GPUs affordable.

I don't see many non-XT sales with a $50 difference.

You'll see markup prices for a while or supply-chain limitations that will result in the RX 9070 sales.

Do they have any control over that though?  NVidia "set" the price of the 5070 Ti at $750 and the 5080 at $999.  That doesn't mean you can buy them for that.

The OEM version will be a bit higher, and price will be higher at release, but if you wait +6 months, I suspect you can start getting MSRP. It's all about patience if you can wait.

So there won't be any OEM versions of the RX 9070 GPUs.  They are all being made by other vendors.  I find that interesting.

I feel like we will have to wait to see actual prices. I think the prices so far are just placeholder prices from before AMD even knew their MSRP. Thats just an idea though.

Its a pity there will be no reference cards. I've always preferred the reference designs.

I would like to see reference cards, but to my knowledge those are not real. Those were just renders.

Yup the image on the AMD site states artistic render not available for purchase. Its a pity as its a decent looking render.
