Driver issues with RX 6600M in HP OMEN 16... tried almost everything but no progress

Hi! I have a HP OMEN 16 with AMD hardware.

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800H

GPU: RX 6600M

The GPU has worked fine for most the year but recently stopped working. When checking device manager, I get a yellow error for the GPU. Also I can't monitor the GPU temperature.

Fixes I tried:

1) DDU (and turning off network) and installing AMD latest drivers and older drivers (23.3.1), also installing drivers from the HP website. Sometimes the error in device manager goes away and I can read GPU temps, but when playing a game, the GPU crashes and I would get AMD error.

2) Factory rebooting the laptop to factory settings. Same driver errors with GPU.

3) I was going to update the GPU BIOS to factory BIOS, but it notified me the BIOS is the same as factory, so I didn't do it. Should I consider doing this? Maybe GPU is corrupted.

4) Disabled auto-updates from windows.

I suspect maybe the GPU could be physically damaged? I'm going to get some thermal paste and inspect it, maybe there is a faulty connection from high temps?

Sometimes when trying to install AMD drivers, I would get the error "driver failed to load".

Sound like you have a hardware issue since you are getting the same errors after doing a Laptop Factory reset.

Try running HP's own Diagnostics on your laptop either from your laptop's own OEM HP Diagnostics or HP Online Support Diagnostics for your laptop.

Found this HP Omen model with R7 5800H and RX 6600m GPU card Download page that has diagnostic software that you should have in your laptop: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/omen-16.1-inch-gaming-laptop-pc-16-c0000/2100371407...

Thanks for your reply.

I ran the HP Diagnostics and passed all the tests related to the GPU.

But I have an error with the driver for the GPU.

Since it's a mobile GPU, would it be easy to desolder it and to inspect it? Or should I give this task to a specialist repair shop. Never tinkered with computer hardware before but I've experience with electronics.

If your HP Omen is still under HP Warranty I would just open a ticket to have them check it out.

If it isn't under HP Warranty I suggest you take it to a specialist in Laptops to check if it is a hardware or software issue.

But first open a HP Forum thread and ask there. I believe many time HP employees answers there.

Found this with similar HP Omen and 6600M GPU card not working. No solution thou: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Gaming-Notebooks/My-omen-16-laptops-dedicated-GPU-AMD-Radeon-RX-6600M-...

I was going to say to try running a Stress test using OCCT but if your GPU card is disabled it won't do any good.

Possibly maybe the GPU is overheating as the above link mentions.

What gets me concerned it is hardware related is that you mentioned you reset your Laptop back to its Factory Defaults. That means everything was the same way the day your purchased it. so the laptop should have worked without any issues. But since you got GPU card errors that seems to indicate some sort of hardware issue.
