7900gre with hdmi2.1, default run at 10bit color, can not down to 8bit.

Recently, I changed my GTX1060 to RX 7900gre.

However, when i connect my 4k 144 display with hdmi2.1.

It runs at 10bit color for default, and can not down to 8bit even change frame rate to 60. it still run at 10bit.

If I run 10bit 120FPS mode , the color format will limit to YCbCr 4:2:0, not 4:4:4 full rgb.

when I chang to DP1.4 port, everything is normal.

when in HDMI, the 8bit option exists, it just flash and won't take affect.

Could you include your monitor make and model as well as the HDMI cable your using. The 4K 120  hdmi 2.1 cable specs require a cable certified to pass 48Gbps with very low noise. They must also be branded like the one seen here https://www.cablestogo.com/tech/hdmi-2-1 . Have you tried disabling HDR in windows display settings and reboot your PC to see is color depth can be set to RGB?

Alreay ordered a new hdmi 2.1 certified cable to troubleshoot that.

The diskplay can run 4K 60Hz 8bit on HDMI2.0 and 4K 120 8bit on DP1.4 with the GTX1060, since

GTX1060 only have HDMI2.0 port and do not support the DP port DSC technology.

According to the seller, the display has two hdmi2.1 port and one DP1.4 port. 4k 120Hz 8bit in HDMI2.1 should be feasible.

What puzzles me is that,  the 7900gre runs even higher 10bit color, if the cable or display do not support enough bandwidth, I thought it will be limited in low level rather than fixed in higher color.

HDR has been disabled.

I have tried 24.5.1/ 24.4.1/ 24.3.1/ 23.10.2 different driver verison with DDU clean up, problem still exists.

I have tried reinstall Win11,  problem still exists.

Have you tried using DDU or AMD Cleanup Utility, and reinstalling the drivers?

That is interesting. I wish I could be of more help. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable comes across this.

Custom Resolution Utility can force all kinds of EDID parameters if supported by the hardware but it can be a source of grief if used improperly. Support for it's use is limited but it can be very useful in situations like this.

now, I can  set 4k 144 8bit/10bit full rgb with HDMI2.1 port. everything is fine except 7900gre will crash and turn to grey screen in low useage. look forward to the new driver in the future more stable.
