I havn't updated my Windows 7 since I reformatted 18 months ago. And it was a year before that the last time. The Sun is still rising in the East and nobody has tried to take over my computer. I've also never had a program that required me to update it. I started getting suspicions about these "security updates". I'm running a good anti-virus and always back up important stuff. It's alot easier than dealing with crappy Microsoft updates. Maybe I've just been lucky.
