I just installed an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU and, so far, am quite happy with it. However, I am noticing that whenever I install a game on the Steam platform, any game, the CPU goes to 88% usage on every thread and up to 180 degrees F while the game downloads and installs.
Is this normal for this CPU? I never noticed it on my 7800X3D. Thanks.
Yeah, that's definitely not normal for the CPU to be ramping up like that...
Have you updated to the latest chipset driver and/or BiOS update? If not, I'd recommend doing that do you don't damage the chip with those extreme temperatures.
(Also, I'd repaste the CPU again as well, for good measure.)

Updated to the latest BIOS. Will check AMD for chipset drivers and get back here.
Updated the latest chipset drivers. Those lowered the load on all threads to about 70% and the temperature dropped to about 170F. Using Arctic Silver for paste. Will check and re-paste tomorrow and get back. I can see 170F or thereabouts during shader compilation but installing a game is unusual.
Yikes, you got me paranoid so I had to test my 9800x3d with some steam games.
Tested a few and CPU usage never went over 33%, and my temperature maxed out at 53 C.
So Scotty you got a problem. BTW the 9800X3D is the best CPU in ages.
OK, so like I said, I installed the latest AMD chipset drivers and the decreased slightly. I have the latest BIOS installed on my Gigabyte X670 Aorus Elite AX FB3G. Am I missing something in the BIOS that is a different setting for the 9800X3D from the 7800X3D (I do not have X3D Turbo enabled)?
Also I noticed that there is no SVM support on the 9800X3D where there was on the 7800X3D so I can't run a virtual machine.
I just tried installing a game from the EPIC store and CPU utilization is about 45% across all threads and temperature gets to about 144F. This installation was to the same Samsung SSD that the Steam games were installed on so I don't think the SSD is at fault, especially since it's new. Tried another Steam game install to a different SSD and we're back to 75% utilization and 174F.
What can Steam be doing to cause this? Never had this temp and CPU utilization with Steam on any of my Ryzen processors except this 9800X3d.
Also a note that as soon as the Steam download completes within 5 seconds the temperature drops back down to 120F so I have no idea what's going on.
I was just playing Dragon Age Veilguard and the CPU temp was at 180F with coolant temp at 95F. Something is definately wrong. Wonder if it's a bad CPU? I don't think the 7800X3D ever approached 175F and then only compiling shaders.
Repasted the CPU. Played Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. CPU temp went up to 174F and stayed there. Ended game and within 5 seconds temp dropped to 120F.
Anyone have any idea what's going on with this CPU?
Honestly, it's a bummer to hear that your temps are still very high; even after repasting and updating on your end. Although 78°C (174°F) isn't terrible -- since these chips are able to maintain 95°C for a bit before thermal throttling -- it's still higher than the average temps (by at least 8-10°C) during idle and/or gaming.
For context, my 7950X3D generally hovers between 43-48°C while idling (with a bunch of minimized apps) and browsing the web (with 10 tabs). When I'm playing games, it ranges between 59-65°C (depending how CPU intensive it is). I'd also like to make note that it's very cold where I live so the ambient room temperature is helping the temps on my CPU and GPU.
Just out of curiosity, are you using an air cooler or AIO cooler for your 9800X3D? If it's an AIO, maybe there could be a defect with it since I'm presuming that your GPU temps are good overall, right?

Ran HWINFO and noticed most of the CPU options were 'RED X' including SVM which I use with VMWare. Went into the FB3g BIOS and the SVM option was not there, nada, nothing. This is unusual because I've used SVM across all by AMD CPUs.
Loaded BIOS FB3f and lo and behold, there was the SVM option. Enabled that option, EXPO for the memory, adjusted the CPU fan parameter and rebooted. Went into HWINFO again and most of the CPU options were now GREEN including SVM.
At this point, it looks like FB3g is BAD. Anyone with a X670 Gigabyte Aorus Elite AX and installing a 9800X3D should avoid this BIOS at all costs.
I downloaded Witcher3 from Steam and the CPU did run at 70% utilization and 160F however.
btanis20: what mobo are you using? What AIO cooler?
I'm using an Asus Prime X670E-Pro Wifi with a Lian Li Galahad AIO 240.
Also, I'm mostly using stock settings, aside from using EXPO I and turning off the following settings below:
* Disabled SVM settings - (To avoid the 10-20% performance hit)
* Disabled Armoury Crate Download - (Asus specific hub for downloading their software)
* Disabled Turbo Game Mode - (pretty much turns the 7950X3D into a 7800X3D by disabling CCD1)
* Disabled Game Optimizer X3D Mode - (it's pretty much "Process Lasso" on a BiOS level)
Speaking of Witcher 3, I'll test the game tomorrow and report my readings with you.

Only BIOS setting I have that you've got is SVM. Set it to disabled. Will check performance later today.
