Screen freezing when alt-tabbing out of games

Hi there

I’ve noticed that when I alt-tab out of certain games on my PC, my screen freezes, and I have to restart my system to fix it. This seems to happen mostly with games that use Vulkan API. Is this a common issue with AMD GPUs, and how can I fix it? Any tips or settings I should check?

Thanks!

Can you please list your PC specs, Adrenalin version, any Windows updates/ programs you've recently installed and any trouble shooting you've already done? That will help the community diagnose and hopefully help you fix the issue.

The issue of screen freezing when alt-tabbing out of games, especially those using the Vulkan API, is relatively common among users with AMD GPUs. It could be caused by outdated drivers, software conflicts, or specific Vulkan-related bugs. To resolve it, ensure your graphics drivers are up-to-date, disable full-screen optimizations for the game, or try switching to borderless window mode. In the AMD Radeon Software, adjusting settings like "Enhance Sync" or disabling "Wait for Vertical Refresh" might help. Additionally, disabling hardware acceleration in background apps, disabling fast startup in Windows, and checking for software conflicts through Task Manager could further improve performance.

Screen freezing when alt-tabbing out of Vulkan API-based games on AMD GPUs is a known issue. To fix it, update your GPU drivers, disable fullscreen optimizations via game properties, or switch to borderless windowed mode. Ensure no conflicting overlays (like AMD Adrenalin or Discord) are active and reset the game’s configuration if needed. If the problem started after a driver update, try rolling back to a previous stable version. Additionally, monitor your system for overheating or unstable overclocks. If unresolved, report the issue to AMD or the game developers.

I’ll update my GPU drivers, disable fullscreen optimizations, and try switching to borderless window mode. I’ll also check for overlay conflicts, adjust settings like "Enhance Sync," and keep an eye on temps. If it still happens, I’ll try rolling back the drivers or report it to AMD. Appreciate the help!
