Pointless getting a 5700x3D if I already have a 5700x?

I have a 4070Ti Super and a 4k 120hz display. I play at 4k, would this be a pointless upgrade? Planning to get either a 5070 or 5080 next year once they're out. I could easily sell the 5700x to pay for some of the cost (especially since I got the 5700x for free), but looking online at 4k it appears that the CPU doesn't matter as much? Or have I misunderstood? TIA

Hi, you are right. At 4K you will be entering the GPU bottleneck.

The CPU difference is still there and could vary from a couple of FPS (near pointless) to 10fps. Depends.

I think you should save the money for AM5. But if your money is burning a hole in your pocket, browse some YouTube videos for the games you play to see if the difference is worth the upgrade.

Good luck

At 4K gaming, the GPU tends to carry most of the workload, so upgrading from a 5700X to a 5700X3D might not make a noticeable difference in performance, especially with your 4070Ti Super. The 3D cache benefits are more apparent in CPU-bound scenarios or lower resolutions. If you're planning to upgrade to a 5070 or 5080 next year, it might be better to hold off and save for that. Unless you're doing productivity tasks or gaming at lower resolutions where the extra cache might help, the upgrade could be more of a luxury than a necessity. Just my two cents!

Good things take time.

In your scenario it is unlikely to be worth the spend. However if you find you have bad 1% lows / stuttering and its bothering  you, then you should consider the X3D. Having access to the memory quickly severely helps smooth out gameplay because of the increase in lows. Being on a good low latency DDR4 you should be fine just letting you know what you would gain if you run into that.

A good practice when comparing CPU's is to look at their FPS benchmark in 1080, then look at your gpu benchmark in 4k. If the gpu benchmark in 4k is lower than weaker CPU you are considering, you won't gain anything by spending more. This gets more complicated when comparing specific games and cpus with a different numbers of cores, etc. But should give you enough to get started.
