Hi all,
I’ve been experiencing persistent green screen crashes on my PC for weeks now, especially during gaming, and I’m unsure what to try next.
I’ve replaced and tested multiple components, yet the issue remains unresolved. I'm hoping someone here can help me pinpoint the problem!
- Green screen crashes occur mostly during gaming (tested with Hunt Showdown, Dead by Daylight and Alone in the Dark )
- Errors like “Unreal Engine is exiting due to D3D device being lost” and “AMD software detected that a driver timeout has occurred” pop up after it recovers from the crash.
- Sometimes it wouldn't even recover and my PC wouldn't boot back up. Not it crashes and recovers, shows the error pop-up.
- Worth mentioning! I tested with less demanding NVIDIA cards and I had no issues. Tested with a brand new more demanding AMD card, instantly crashed.
- I exported my Event Viewer errors, too, if anyone thinks that could be helpful.
Current Setup:
- GPU: 16GB XFX Radeon RX 6800XT Speedster MERC319 GAMING DDR6 (Retail)
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D 8x 3.40GHz So.AM4 WOF
- Motherboard: Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite AX V2 So.AM4 ATX Retail
- Cooler: be quiet! Pure Rock 2 Black Tower Kühler
- RAM: 16GB (2x 8GB) Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO schwarz DDR4-3200 DIMM CL16-18-18-36 Dual Kit
- SSD: Samsung 990 PRO NVMe M.2 SSD, 2TB
Parts Replaced or Adjusted:
PSU: Replaced with a Corsair RM850e (2023), suspecting power delivery issues.
GPU: Switched to an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX, but crashes persisted, so I refunded it and reverted to my current RX 6800XT. Less demanding NVIDIA cards I managed to borrow worked fine.
Motherboard: Sent for RMA after discovering black, greasy spots on the back. It was returned with just a BIOS update.
Storage: Stopped using my old HDD (8+ years old) to rule out storage-related faults. Freshly installed Windows in the Smasung 990 PRO.
BIOS Settings: Tried adjusting the ASPM Configuration for PEG to “L0s” but still no luck.
- CPU: Sent for RMA and was returned, they said it had no issues.
Troubleshooting Attempts:
Driver Updates/Rollbacks: Updated to the latest AMD drivers, and also tried rolling back to previous stable versions. Uninstalled with DDU and reinstalled drivers directly without Adrenaline.
BIOS Updates/Rollbacks: Updated my motherboard’s BIOS, and even reverted it during testing.
Display Connections: Tested both HDMI and DisplayPort on multiple displays.
OS Reinstallation: Performed a full Windows 11 reinstall with a clean format of my storage.
Stress Testing: Ran MSI Kombustor to check GPU stability. Saw green dots on the screen before the crashes occurred.
Diagnostics: Ran memory and disk diagnostics, both of which passed without errors. Tested with different sticks, 1 at a time, different slots, etc.
- Storage: I ran Samsung Magician health checks on the SSD, I was afraid I installed it too tight and the cooling pad had leaked and was the cause of the black greacy spots on the back of the motherboard. The scans say there is no ussue though.
I do now know what to try next.
At this point I can't tell if its an AMD issue. It has to be something that stayed the same after a fresh windows install and reinstalling all drivers.
Any help would be appreciated.
