Hi,
I have a Minisforum UM790 Pro which started behaving badly lately. The little machine is equipped with an AMD 7940HS CPU and integrated 780M GPU and I have used it as an office PC connected to two 4K screens since buying it in February 2024.
Early November I started having the first problems. I started having the famous blue screen with as stop code either HYPERVISOR_ERROR or CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT. However lately, it simply crashes after less than a minute after booting and it simply freezes without even showing a BSoD.
I have first tried every textbook solution such as running the memory test, running system scans such as SFC/ scannow or DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. But all these did not show any problem on the device.
I then figured out that the problem was coming from the GPU. If I disable the AMD 780M GPU in the Windows device manager, the device runs fine again without any problem, but of course only on one screen and with a 1920 x 1080 resolution.
As a result I removed all AMD drivers and I did a clean install from scratch with the latest available AMD drivers, but it did not help. From the moment I enable the AMD 780M GPU in the device manager, the device crashes within minutes. Next I went to the “support” site of Minisforum to search for the OEM drivers, but those are more than one year old and running the device with those drivers does not solve the issue either, it crashes within minutes as well…
Personally, I think that the GPU is toast, but I just wanted to check whether somebody has another thing which I can try with this annoying device before I declare it dead.
Thank you.
