Can I use the hd7870 to watch an online movie or video file on my tv?

I connected the hdmi out on the hd7870 to the hdmi in on my samsung smart tv. All I can get is my desktop background image. No icons, just the image (and I can't even adjust that to fit the screen). I thought I could go online, go to one of the movie sites, and watch my selection on my tv? Not into gaming, so is gaming the only thing that works with this connection?

Press Win+P

Select the mode you want.

PC only    -Display only on PC monitor.

Duplicate  -Your monitor and TV mirror the same image (this option will work for watching your movies)

Extend      -Probably the mode you are on atm. Extends desktop over the 2 monitors. You can drag movie players, browsers between monitor

Second Screen only    - Switches the desktop from the monitor to the TV. Monitor will turn off.

I have my Samsung Smart TV connected via HDMI to my GPU card and my Computer Monitor connected via DisplayPort to my GPU.

This is what I have set in Windows Settings - Display so that I can watch movies on my TV or Monitor:

Monitor 1 is my computer Monitor and Monitor 3 is my Samsung TV.

I would guess that the issue you have is in the software setup that the others have shown and likely will help.

In the even that it is an issue in how it is hooked up, I have been down that patch. My 7870 only had DVI and RGB ports.

If your 7870 is a model without HDMI. Then it will have DVI with Audio Pass Through. You can then get a DVI HDMI adaptor. Buy one that says it is AMD or ATI compatible if possible. You could message AMD support and see if they have them available or the support department of your cards maker. For instance XFX sent me on just for the asking some years back. Either say support may know exactly the model to look for regardless if needed.

I originally ordered one and then another that did not work. Did some digging and found out it matters what kind. That was when I contacted my card maker XFX.

Just wanted to share in case it is relevant now or in the future.
