B550 USB Issues

Hi, I recently upgraded to a TUF GAMING B550-PLUS WIFI II motherboard and a 5800x3D from an old Intel Z170 system, I swapped all of the other parts as they still have a lot of life in them for my use case. However there has been an issue with (what I assume) is my usb ports. When using my Rift S, it frequently cuts out as well as has staticy/crackly audio. I have confirmed that it is not the oculus as after reverting back to the Z170 motherboard it did not replicate, though it did when I went back to the B550. I have all of the latest drivers, as well as the latest bios according to the ASUS and AMD websites. I have also tried several of the previous fixes to usb problems (PCIE from gen4 to gen 3, distable C State, etc...) and none have worked. I have also tried clean installs of my OS. I have tried windows 11, windows 10, and even linux mint as a hail mary. Nothing fixes it, I have no other issues as far as I can tell with the platform, my mic, keyboard, and mouse work fine. I was beyond excited for this update, but not being able to use vr kills everything, dont want to have to return the parts.

My build:

CPU: 5800x3D

Motherboard: TUF GAMING B550-PLUS WIFI II

GPU: Geforce GTX 1070

RAM: Corsair 4x8gb DDR4 c16 @2666mhz

SSD: Samsung PM961 256GB

PSU: Corsair CSM 550W

OS: Windows 10 currently, would like to be at Windows 11

VR: Oculus Rift S

Have you tried reflashing the bios even though it says the same version? Better yet, have you reset bios to default?

Regardless of platform .. You need to upgrade your PSU

80 Plus, AKA White rated PSU's shouldn't be put in anything you actually care about

I'd recommend a 650wtt (or higher) 80+ Gold (or better rated) PSU from a reputable brand. Check hardware reviews before buying anything

AM4/5 and newer Intel platforms are going to be more demanding on any PSU. A PSU upgrade might fix the crackling .. might not .. but should be done regardless.

What are you running for a cooler on your 5800X3D?

What case? .. how is your airflow?

Have you tried running with just 2 stick of RAM in slots A2/B2 for testing purposes?

5000 series Ryzen's "sweet spot" for RAM speed is about 3600 .. the tighter the timings, the better.. just an FYI

1: My psu is gold, it is about 200+ watts over what I need , it should run great, runs great on the z170 platform still..

2: Cooler is a H100i v2 with a am4 bracket, keeps my 6 gen cold, same with the 5800x3D, case is 450D

3: Air flow is good, 3out, 2 in, ran no different with side panel off

4: Ran with 1, 2, 4 stick between several frequencies. Same result, if a usb can’t run on the lowest speed ram, it’s not the rams speed… it’s the platform

I returned my stuff, it’s clear that the platform has issues, tooo many messages to think this is a one off. Not sure if I will trust amd again

this is not my first build, i spent a week of my life doing everything so bringing these “no duh” solution dosent do anything. Sorry if I sound bitter but amd has screwed me twice now. Not that I’m happy to go to the blue demon

Yeah the PSU should not be a problem. That system draws max 400w and 550w gold is rated for 550w constant usage so it's probably the motherboard. It's not amd's fault though, it's the boardmakers not testing their chipsets properly before release since many people have usb issues and some were resolved in bios and others just can't be resolved at all. Just like yours.

Hope the new system gives you less of a headache and works as expected :))

searching "Corsair CSM 550W" comes up as both 80 Plus and Gold variants. I would not say that 550w is "enough" with moderns setups ..

Air flow is usually worse with side panel off

the 3600 sweet spot info was to let you know that your leaving performance on the table.. nothing to do with USB issues

Sorry you are having issues .. but I haven't any of consequence since trading my 7700k setup for a B350 and Ryzen 1700 setup years ago (couldn't get RAM to run at full speed is the biggest issue with 1000 and 2000 series Ryzen is all). So the AM4 platform has had a good long run (and still running on daughter's and wife's setup) in my household.

I run ASRock motherboards and have for years now if that matters

I did have an issue on my wife's setup due to running an under power power supply that I though was for sure "good enough"

Maybe list all your trouble shooting steps next time so our time is not wasted with "no duh" responses ..lol

You might want to try a separate USB 3.0 or 3.1 device to connect your Oculus Rift S to.  Try either a PCIe card with the USB 3.0 ports or even a remote USB 3.0 hub and see if the signal isolation helps.  You might have a grounding issue, so be sure the PSU is plugged into a grounded outlet (preferably an UPS device).  Of course, it could just be insufficient chipset drivers for the motherboard chipset.

A USB hub might resolve the issues.A USB hub might resolve the issues.

Guess I didn’t mention this, but I also bought a second motherboard to see if it worked. It didn’t. I tried all the chipset drivers I could find, on all the os and bios. Same issue everytime. I have seen to buy a usb hub, but that seems unreasonable to me. Worked fine on intel without one… idk. I’ve asked around a lot and get the same answers. Returned everything and upgraded to a new intel system with same specs, issue isn’t there, but tell me it isn’t Amd…
