Hello,
I have recently finished the build specified below and I am at a loss when it comes to identifying the cause of in-game crashes. Everything is brand new and was carefully assembled by me.
Computer Type: Desktop, custom
GPU: Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX 5700 XT, 8 GB GDDR6, stock clock, no Crossfire
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600X, Stock clocks
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-15D (only 1 fan because of RAM clearance)
Motherboard: MSI B450 Tomahawk Max (BIOS 7C02v35)
RAM: G.SKILL Trident Z Neo F4-3600C18D-32GTZN 2x16GB, slots 2 & 4, stock clock, A-XMP on.
PSU: Corsair CX750M (750 W)
UPS: CyberPower 1500PFCLCD
Operating System & Version: Windows 10 Home 64-bit (Genuine, Activated, Updated)
Boot Drive: Intel 660p NVMe PCIe M.2 1TB
GPU Drivers: 19.12.3 / 19.50.03.05-191216a-349841E-RadeonSoftwareAdrenalin2020
Display: Vizio PQ65-F1 4K@60Hz (no adaptive refresh rate :( )
Chipset Drivers: 1.11.22.454 (checked all the boxes when installing)
Background Applications: NordVPN, Microsoft OneDrive, Google Backup and Sync, Steam... doesn't really seem to make a difference
Case: Phanteks P400A
Description of Original Problem: Every game I play crashes to a black screen (no video output) and no audio. The motherboard's top-most EZ Debug light lights up, indicating a CPU issue. Games crashed so far: Civilization 5 (playable for a long time, random crashes, usually when Alt+Tab-ing), Civilization 6 (runs for a few seconds), Tales from Borderlands (crash in menu), Borderlands 2 (crash in menu), BioShock Remastered (ran for a few minutes), Half-Life 2 (crashes the quickest despite chugging along at 295 FPS @ 4K high).
Troubleshooting: Stress tests and benchmarks like FurMark, Prime95, RealBench, Memtest86, Cinebench, and User Benchmark pose no problem. Windows logs only show an unexpected shutdown when the crashes happen, nothing before. Turning off Radeon Image Sharpening, Enhanced Sync, and Anti-Lag resulted in no changes.
Running the RealBench Stress Test for 15 minutes yields the following results with no sign that they would keep climbing:
Max GPU Hot Spot Temp: 72.0ºC
Max CPU Tdie Temp: 73.5ºC
Max UPS Load: 531W
Ambient: 74ºF (23.3ºC)
Update: I finally caught an error in a windows log:
