Massive Performance. Maximum Fidelity.
AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution1 (AMD FSR) is our cutting-edge upscaling technology originally released in 2021 and updated to AMD FSR 2 last year. Since then, the number of available and upcoming games that support FSR has grown rapidly to over 300 games!
In addition to bringing AMD FSR to more and more games — we’ve also been working hard to bring you the next generation of the technology, AMD FSR 3! It uses a combination of super resolution temporal upscaling technology and frame generation to deliver massive framerates in supported games.
We are excited today to give you a first look at FSR 3 in one of the games expected to add support, Forspoken by Square Enix. And what’s more, it’s coming out sooner than you think with the first game updates planned for early fall in Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum by Ascendant Studios and Electronic Arts.
New Features of AMD FSR 3
The key enhancement in AMD FSR 3 over FSR 2 is the addition of frame generation. This technology uses an enhanced version of AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF)2 optical flow technology and temporal game data such as motion vectors to generate additional high-quality frames for a higher framerate in supported games, up to 2x2. The additional performance from frame generation can be extremely beneficial in very demanding situations such as gaming at 4K with maximum ray tracing settings or when framerates are heavily CPU-limited.
During development, we were fully conscious of the challenges involved so that frame generation did not have an impact on in-game UI. We have addressed this in FSR 3 with UI processing included as an integral part of our solution to minimize any impact frame generation may have on the in-game interface.
AMD FSR 3 also includes the latest version of our temporal upscaling technology used in FSR 2 which has been optimized to be fully integrated with the new frame generation technology, and a new “Native AA” quality mode which we go into more detail later in this blog. However, our focus with FSR 3 has been on creating high-performance, high-quality frame generation technology that works across a broad range of products.
Frame Generation for Massive Performance
AMD FSR 3 frame generation technology, when combined with super resolution upscaling, enables framerates in supported games that were previously thought of as unachievable in the most graphically demanding titles, even at 4K with maximum ray tracing settings. You can use frame generation with any of the familiar FSR 3 upscaling quality modes, including “Quality” and “Performance”, so you can configure the ratio of upscaling image quality to performance to suit your preferences.
In the chart below you can see the massive up to 3.3x boost in framerate3 AMD FSR 3 in “Performance” mode and frame generation enabled can provide.
One important point to note, though — when using frame generation, we recommend always running at a minimum of 60 FPS before frame generation is applied for an optimal and low-latency experience. Depending on the graphics hardware being used and overall system specifications, we suggest adjusting your game graphic settings, resolution, and upscaling quality mode to achieve this.
New “Native AA” Mode for Maximum Fidelity
“Native AA” stands for Native Anti-Aliasing and is a new quality mode being introduced in AMD FSR 3. Unlike the other modes, it lets you use AMD FSR 3 without applying any upscaling but still applies the high-quality anti-aliasing and sharpening of FSR for improved image quality over native resolution.
That means in cases where the default game AA is not optimal, using “Native AA” mode can provide better image quality. There is a modest performance cost when using this new mode, however, when combined with AMD FSR 3 frame generation, “Native AA” mode can also provide a substantial performance boost as can be seen in the chart below.
“Native AA” mode plus frame generation offers the best of both worlds — improved image quality and performance. 4
Latency Reduction
AMD FSR 3 includes latency reduction technology for responsive gaming experiences when using frame generation technology. Running at 60+ FPS before enabling FSR 3 frame generation is recommended to mitigate any latency introduced by the technology.
Additionally, gamers using AMD Radeon™ RX 7000 Series graphics cards can optionally switch on and combine the benefits of our new driver-based AMD Radeon™ Anti-Lag+ technology5 (part of an upcoming update to the AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition™ application) to further lower latency in supported games, which will include FSR 3 games like Forspoken, when frame generation is used. For gamers using AMD Radeon™ RX 6000 series or lower graphics cards when playing an FSR 3 game, they can use Anti-Lag instead, which works in all games.
For all gamers using virtually any hardware, the built-in latency reduction technology in AMD FSR 3 will provide valuable latency reduction when using frame generation, and our in-driver latency reduction solutions are a BONUS for AMD Radeon gamers that stack on top to provide the best experience possible.
AMD FSR 3 Game Support
The first games expected to add support for AMD FSR 3 are Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum in early fall. We are also announcing an initial 10 further games that are expected to support FSR 3, with even more games expected to add FSR 3 in the future:
We already have 15 game developers and publishers currently committed to supporting AMD FSR 3, with more expected to come on board in the future:
We are also working closely with Epic Games to bring support for AMD FSR 3 to Unreal Engine, and an FSR 3 plug-in for Unreal® Engine 5 will be available soon for developers to help make integrating FSR 3 into their UE5 games as easy as possible.
Continued Support for Open Innovation
As part of our AMD FidelityFX technology suite of features and technologies for developers, AMD FSR 3 will be an open-source technology, freely available for developers on GPUOpen.com in the near future and supported on a wide range of products and platforms, including consoles. FSR 3 will also be joining the AMD FidelityFX SDK alongside the other AMD FidelityFX technologies available on GPUOpen.com.
AMD FSR 3 is designed as a scalable solution with frame generation that supports multiple hardware platforms. It is designed to work on many types of PCs, regardless of the underlying graphics hardware vendor, and even consoles. AMD FidelityFX technologies make it easier for developers to create for one platform and easily port over to another, getting their latest creations into the hands of as many gamers as possible. AMD FSR 3 will also be easy to integrate, allowing developers to spend their valuable time focusing on other critical areas of the game that need more attention to enable the best possible experiences, and help them meet deadlines to bring their latest creations to market.
AMD FSR 3 Supported Products
AMD FSR 3 is an open technology that does not require machine learning (ML) hardware, allowing it to be supported on a broad range of products and platforms, including consoles. When using FSR 3 with super resolution upscaling and frame generation we recommend the following hardware:

(Note: we do not suggest using frame generation on products lower than our recommendations above. How frame generation performs will depend on the capabilities of your GPU and on older hardware you may not have an optimal experience and may see little to no improvement in performance.)
As AMD FSR 3 is an open technology, it will work on a broader range of hardware beyond what we recommend above. If just using super resolution upscaling WITHOUT frame generation, we recommend the following hardware:
