3DMark® by UL Solutions is “the world’s most popular benchmark,” and back in December 2022, we announced that an AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution (FSR) technology feature test (1) would be coming to 3DMark.

Now we’re super excited to announce that the AMD FSR feature test is available in the latest update released today for the 3DMark Advanced and Professional Editions. Read on to learn more about the test’s features and how it can be used to evaluate both FSR 2 performance and image quality.

Test AMD FSR 2 Using 3DMark

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology is an open-source cross-platform upscaling solution, with the latest AMD FSR 2 temporal upscaling technology delivering incredible image quality and boosting framerates in supported games across a wide range of products and platforms.

3DMark feature tests are specialized tests for specific technologies and this new test helps you evaluate
AMD FSR 2.2, the latest update to AMD FSR 2 technology. The updates in AMD FSR 2.2 include reduced “high-velocity” ghosting and improved temporal stability for enhanced upscaling image quality. Using the test, you can compare the performance and image quality of AMD FSR 2 technology with native rendering using temporal anti-aliasing (TAA).

AMD FSR 2 Performance Comparison

The AMD FSR feature test for 3DMark uses a modified version of the 3DMark Speed Way benchmark with the DirectX® 12 Ultimate features (such as ray tracing) disabled so the test can be compatible with the broad range of graphics cards that support AMD FSR 2 technology.

Before running the test, you can set your desired output resolution and AMD FSR 2 image quality mode -- either “Quality”, “Balanced”, “Performance”, or “Ultra Performance”. The test then renders a scene from Speed Way at native resolution with TAA to measure the baseline FSR “Off” performance.

It then renders the scene at a lower resolution (determined by the AMD FSR quality mode selected) upscaled to the output resolution. The results provide the FPS from each pass
so you can see how much of a performance improvement AMD FSR 2 technology delivers over native resolution with TAA on the graphics card being tested.

AMD FSR 2 Image Quality Comparison

The AMD FSR feature test for 3DMark also includes a built-in frame inspector tool to compare AMD FSR 2 technology image quality to native rendering with TAA using an interactive side-by-side comparison. This feature of the test generates a series of frames at a chosen AMD FSR 2 quality mode taken from the same Speed Way scene, displayed side-by-side.

There are controls to pan around and zoom in for a closer inspection of the differences between native with TAA and AMD FSR 2.2 output and all the frame images are stored in a temporary folder so you can save them if needed for future comparisons.

AMD FSR Feature Test for 3DMark Compatibility

As AMD FSR technology is an open-source cross-platform solution, this new feature test in 3DMark can be used with any supported GPU from AMD, Intel, and Nvidia. For a list of 3DMark supported GPUs from all vendors, please see the 3DMark user guide.

The AMD FSR feature test for 3DMark is a free update to the 3DMark Advanced Edition (available on Steam or the UL Solutions Benchmarks website) and the 3DMark Professional Edition. For those of you who already own 3DMark Advanced but bought it before October 12, 2022, you’ll need to buy the Speed Way upgrade to unlock the AMD FSR feature test.
