Fallout 76 Poor Optimization

I just started playing Fallout 76 but I can't seem to get the game to utilize my GPU more than 60%. I have tried various ini edits and it just doesn't seem to run well on my setup. I expected to see around 200fps after disabling the frame cap, setting iPresentInterval=0, but it rarely exceeds 120fps and dips to the 50s at times. I know there are problems with the engine not behaving properly beyond Xfps, but is there any way to get the game to run at a solid 120 without the dips?

I've been getting similar performance on my PC. Did you ever figure out a fix? I've been legitimately trying everything to no avail.

I didn't find any fixes. I might revisit the game later on to try to get it to run better, but for now I just moved the game to my backlog.

Hello its nothing new cause Fallout 76 use exact the same engine as Fallout 4, Dont run game really above 100fps. Go to nexus mods and find mod which optimize the game, for example u have mod which will increase utilisation of ram/vram so less fps drops, and many other stuff which bethseda screw up and modders fix in term of optimalization.

Fast search:

Bethseda uses a very outdated game engine thats why even on good pc its just run like stinky ass same for starfield its using the same fallout 4 engine but if they put new stuff there the performance is just ass.

thats just how fallout 76 is unfortunately, it has a very outdated engine with inefficient cpu usage. that said, with your specs, you will probably run into a physics engine bug indoors where the game actually runs at too high of a framerate, causing the physics engine to break. when this happens to me, i generally cant stop moving indoors or i will get stuck in one place if i left off of the movement keys long enough to come to a stop. radeon chill fixes this entirely though, and also makes my 7900xt cap out at like 120 watts peak while running f76. ask me how i know these things 😛

That makes sense. I know the engine, for most Bethesda games, is designed to cap around 120fps.

some things you can try to get better framerates is to turn some of the settings down. like ultra shadows looks pretty much the same as medium shadows, but with a huge fps hit.

Okay sweet. I think back in the day I did the same with Skyrim's shadows.

My experience with Fallout 76 is very smooth, nearly flawless. I can run two copies of Fallout 76 at the same time, one from Steam and the other from the MS Store.

I'm getting up to 142 fps outside settlements, dips into the 70s at places like Foundation, and "average" about 135 fps, according to Adrenaline, but I think that averages includes the time the setting screens are running at 400+ fps. Radeon Chill only works while the game is running. Realistic average is prob about 110 fps.

Adrenaline 24.1.1.  Game setting are off or disabled except for the following:

HYPR-RX (?), haven't looked into what this is yet

Radeon Chill:  Enabled, with upper and lower limits set to 142

Radeon Image Sharpening:  On, set to 80.

Wait for Vertical Refresh:  On, unless application specifies

AMD FreeSync:  AMD Optimized

The game is set to use borderless windows at 1440p. Full screen gets better fps but it makes toggling to another window too difficult. Mostly running on Ultra settings, a few things turned down to High.

In the ini file has ipresentinterval=0

Note:  Every time the game updates on Steam/ MS, Radeon Chill gets turned off. This leads to very high fps, which causes my character to randomly freeze. It's pretty obvious, and goes away when I re-enable Chill.
