I have been wanting to get a new computer for a while now, I need the power that you could get from a desktop, but I still need portability. I have already upgraded the RAM and HDD. I replaced the 1tb spinning disk, with a V-NAND SSD
(Samsung 850 Evo) I could upgrade the fan and heat sync(Includes Heatpipe), but I don't know of any that will work with my current computer.
Mobile workstation Specs
If you think this is possible what would you change, or keep the same
The ECC ram limits my processer options to EPYC and Opteron.
COMPLETELY unrealistic
you can now have a Deskio Intel i7 9700k (95W) performance in a Laptop with AMD Ryzen 7 4800H (45W) - maybe paired with an AMD RX5700m (120W) 4-8GB - you add 16-32GB DDR4-3000CL16. // 180W combined would be max for a 15" Laptop - 17" maybe 200W // My Acer Nitro 5 has ~100W and can keep that pretty cool (~60°C under load with max fans with a 28°C ambient)
it is TOTAL UNREALISTIC to have a 250W CPU in a Laptop!
My Acer Nitro 5 (Ryzen 5 2500U (30W) + RX560X 4G (60W) + 16GB DDR4-2400CL16 + 1x m.2 SSD + 1x 2.5" SSD) has 1 m.2 slot AND 1x 2.5" sata slot - max i have seen so far are 2x m.2 or 2x 2.5"
ECC Ram makes no sense in a laptop
Touchscreen is possible - but i prefer matte displays. My Acer Nitro 5 has a 60hz IPS Panel with deactivated FreeSync - i was able to OC it to 100hz + FreeSync (35-99)
Full-RGB Keyboard is possible - depends on Laptop OEM - my Acer Nitro 5 has only red LED keyboard
so realistic is this:
15" or 17"
Ryzen 7 4800H (45W) (performance like a desktop i7 9700k)
RX5700m (120W) (~performance of a Desktop GTX 2070 or Vega 64)
32GB DDR4-3000CL16
1x m.2 PCI-e 4.0
1x 2.5" SATA
1440p 144hz IPS with FreeSync (simply because a 4k 144hz IPS with FreeSync would up the price by 400$)
and now we still talk about 1000-1300$ minimum
I know that machine is unrealistic, I didn't ask if you can build it with off the shelf components, did I? It would be more of a Luggable at that point tho.
btw, Nice machine you proposed, I would love to see something like that sometime. (I need a lot of stuff before I ever build that, but it looks promising)
Looking at it now, Rackmount would be better... also for a laptop, would it be possible for an OEM to build a Workstation using EPYC embedded, and a mobile Radeon Pro GPU.
You are right, that would never fit in a Laptop and still be portable.
