Drivers for Radeon 5700 on Linux Mint not loading - only boots in compatibility mode

I have a very weird situation...  I have just updated to Linux Mint 20.1, along with Linux Kernel 5.8.0-44. My system no longer boots "normally." The only way I can get access to my files and programs is by selecting "Recovery Mode" in the grub launcher.

I have tried installing the latest "amdgpu drivers" for Ubuntu, which should work for Linux Mint, but I get a "Bad return status for module build on kernel" error.  What can I provide the Community to help you help me get back to "normal" with my new machine?

BTW, I had a notice an update for a mesa driver was available, but when I did the update, I received the following error message:

What to do?

Dear AMD Community:

A fantastic community member on the Linux Mint Community Forum has been helping diagnose my problem, which is simply that I cannot see my Radeon 5700.  A question has arisen with respect to the 5700:

"Does the RX 5700 XT have a VBIOS where it might be storing information?"

I do not know the answer to this question, but I hope someone in the community might.

Please help if you can.
