How can you run two monitors at different resolutions?

As Albert Einstein said, "I could have done so much more with a Big Al's Computer!".

I run a 32" 1440p as my primary monitor with a 24" 1080p monitor. I play games or work on my large monitor and use the small one for maps, guide videos or music. 7800X3D/7900XT/Windows 11 PC Automatically sets best resolution for both Screens. Settings-System-Display-[screen]-select resolution for each display-Set display location by clicking Identify-then Extend these displays from the drag down box. I know you post all the time BigAl01, so I'm guessing you might just be joking or wondering about screen resolution differences being annoying while viewing images across multiple displays, but there's a real life example of how to get set up and why someone might. Hope that was helpful or that the genuine answer to a joke at least made you laugh 👍🤣

I've never run two monitors on one computer.  I wasn't joking, but I understand what you are describing in the settings.  With older Windows installs, I thought that both monitors needed to run at the same resolutions.  Maybe I was thinking about older video cards that required the same resolution.  Anyway, I'm glad it works for you and others.

Now here is a question for you.  Does the differences in resolution affect game play on the main monitor?  Does it reduce frame rates for your gaming experience?

As Albert Einstein said, "I could have done so much more with a Big Al's Computer!".

Because I run the 7900XT on a 1440p monitor, the card has plenty of headroom to run games at max settings without dropping any frames when I'm using the other screen for YouTube or music. I hadn't intended to run two monitors either, but when I was setting up my new monitor, my old one looked like it would fit nicely as a second screen for the aforementioned tasks or as a Kindle screen. I also run the mini NES/SNES/SEGA consoles through the 1080p monitor when I want to play old school Mario Bros, Altered Beast or Zelda. I assume Windows 11 manages resolutions automatically across any media across both displays. I can select resolution and refresh rate to match in Windows settings and could run both in games in widescreen format via in-game display settings, but haven't as I'm too lazy to figure out the widescreen resolution.
