Accelerate Machine Learning with Windows 11 and AMD

With the release of Windows 11, GPU accelerated machine learning (ML) training within the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is now broadly available across all DirectX® 12-capable GPUs from AMD. DirectML is a high-performance, hardware-accelerated DirectX 12 library for machine learning tasks used by data scientists, ML engineers, and developers.

"Microsoft has worked closely with AMD to support GPU-accelerated machine learning training within the Windows Subsystem for Linux, helping drive the democratization of machine learning by enabling the use of AMD hardware to power popular ML training workflows in Windows 11." -- Kam VedBrat, General Manager, Windows AI Platform, Microsoft

TensorFlow is a popular open-source platform for machine learning and is a leading framework for training of machine learning models. Thanks to Microsoft and AMD co-engineering efforts, TensorFlow has been coupled with DirectML to enable high-performance training and inferencing of machine learning models on AMD GPUs in Windows 11. Now a larger set of students and professionals can take advantage of GPU accelerated ML training on the AMD-powered Windows PC they already own.

Support for GPU compute functionality in WSL is now available for Windows 11 and within our latest AMD Radeon™ Software Adrenalin graphics driver. Support within the AMD Radeon™ PRO Software for Enterprise driver is coming soon. Microsoft will also support this functionality in the upcoming Windows 10, version 21H2 release.

The Microsoft and AMD co-development approach and ongoing build-out of machine learning platforms will continue to power the next generation of consumer and business tools.
