Today AMD celebrates its 55th anniversary. AMD has a rich history of innovation, yet the incredible AI inflection point we find ourselves in today marks a new era of opportunity and impact for our company. We made the call over a decade ago to leverage our strength and heritage in high-performance computing and invest for the future. Those bets have paid off as all our markets now demand the utmost in compute efficiency (performance per Watt of energy expended), and AI enablement.  With that in mind, as we mark this milestone, I’d like to reflect on the last five years of innovation and impact at AMD and look forward to what we can expect in the next five.

The launch of AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 7000 processors builds on AMD's proven workstation track record and continues the company's history of providing incredible performance to the most demanding workstation customers. Like the earlier Threadripper 3000 series, the Threadripper 7000 series pushes the performance envelope with higher CPU IPC, more RAM bandwidth, support for new types of memory, and myriad additional improvements.

At AMD, we are proud to be founding members and key contributors of the UEC. Leading technology companies formed it to focus on tuning the Ethernet foundation for high-performance Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and High-Performance Computing (AI/ML/HPC) workloads. We believe it is the natural progression of our core AMD products, like AMD EPYC™ server processors and AMD Instinct™ MI Series accelerators as well as our growing Alveo SmartNIC portfolio. With all these great products to choose from, we need a robust, tuned network to connect them.

In the previous article “Ultrathin SOLIDWORKS Workstations - Benchmarking the Lenovo ThinkPad P16s Gen 1 AMD”, we touched on the battery life of that mobile workstation when configured with the standard 52.5Wh battery option. Running SOLIDWORKS on battery power, we could get up to 2-3 hours of constant use before the system required a recharge.

Since then, Lenovo has supplied us with the same laptop, but with a large-capacity 86Wh battery. Here, we’ll reveal our comparison testing results and share some important lessons about balancing battery and performance in Windows 11.
