A Fatal Hardware Error Has Occured. AMD Northbridge.

    emeraldacid

So, full admission this is the third time I've had to make a thread for this issue. Past threads have been locked or something similar to prevent replies with no actual solution to the problems, so a lot of this OP will be cut and paste. Anyways, Ever since I built this computer in August last year, I've been having  random and unpredictable computer crashes. They aren't blue screens, but it's still an issue because it forces a reboot to get out of the crash, and that causes issues with other things that I deal with, such as internet caches dumping themselves every time, and graphical settings being reset. The actual error message is:

A fatal hardware error has occurred.

      Component: AMD Northbridge

      Error Source: Machine Check Exception

I've been trying to solve or get help with this for months upon months but nobody seems to know what the actual cause is. Google searches show that this has been a recurring problem for AMD users since Windows Vista, and to this day there is no solution. I've tried multiple suggestions both from users here, as well as many other help related forums, but none have worked. To date, I have tried:

Updating Drivers: didn't work (Drivers were already fully updated)

Uninstalling and reinstalling all drivers and chipsets fresh: didn't work.

Removing and re-seating the GPU: didn't work.

Using many different power outlets in case the power was dirty: didn't work.

Cleaned out the entire inside of the machine: didn't work.

Multiple different fan settings and orientations to disperse heat differently: didn't work

Stress tests and mem tests: didn't work. (Everything came back as working fine)

      Sfc /scannow, chkdsk c: /F /B /X, DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth, DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /AnalyzeComponentStore, ran DDU in Safe Mode, none of these worked.

The only thing I can even think of left is a Hardware issue, but there have been so many different claims of cause that I wouldn't know where to start. Bad PSU, GPU, CPU, Montherboard, Memory, pretty much everything. What's more, I have zero funds to go about just replacing parts on a whim, so if I'm going to replace a part, I need more info to be certain that I'm fixing the right part. The closest thing to "likely" that I've considered as a purchase is the PSU, since mine runs unusually hot for some undetermined reason (127*C at its recorded hottest, but it's constantly fluctuating between 50-110 on HWMonitor), while the GPU and CPU are running within acceptable temperatures.

      My machine specs are:

      Radeon R9 270X GPU

      ASRock 980DE3/U3S3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard

      AMD FX-4350 4.2GHz Quad-Core Processor

      16G of Memory

      600W Power Supply

      Windows 8.1

Did you update mobo bios for the 4350.

Have you ever attempted to oc cpu/modify bios settings.

How many ram sticks (are they same make/model/timings).

          PSU make/model might help.

Just to keep the topic alive for other potential opinions, if I do manage to somehow get the new PSU and the problem still occurs, what's the next step? I really have no ideas left considering everything that I've already tried.

I can see you have tried almost everything. To make a suggestion you can try one more thing. Access your bios, then go to the CPU settings, at the bottom should be voltages, you can set those to manual it particular look for one that is CPU NB VID  try to increase that to about 1.3V  see if it improves stability,  I just found out that some AMD cards draw more power from the rest of the motherboard and cause this error. Am currently plagued by this issue as well but am testing with the voltages to see if that removes the crashes

Will report for more info later on Good luck by the way am never buying anything AMD again

If/when the crash happens again, I'll see if changing that does anything. Although it doesn't seem like it'd do anything if the problem is the PSU just not having enough power in the first place.

                      Hi,

Have you ever managed to solve this problem?

I got similar one. ASRock 980DE3/U3S3, AMD FX-8350 CPU and crashes - not blue screen - just sudden shutdown, x124 bluescreen, same errors in logs as yours. My problem was, that I upgraded BIOS from 1.60 to 2.00. That was mistake. Reverting exactly to 1.60 solved the issue for me, after 3 days of fighting with RAM, CPU cooler, NVidia GTX PCI-E graphics card, analyzing memory dumps... On the other hand I got 750W PSU.

What kind of cooler do you use? ASRock says on CPU compatibility list for this mobo, that you need to use top-down cooler (like Noctua NH-C14S) for this mobo, due to CPU power section overheating with all FX processors. Phenoms do not require this, but FXes do.

Not ever solved, no. In fact, another crash just happened yesterday.

I only have the case fans for dispersing heat. Not counting the one specific to the CPU or PSU, or the two of the GPU, I have three of them. The biggest one is on the front of the case, the second biggest is on the top of the case, and the smallest one is on the back of the case, directly in line with the CPU. The left side of the case is also more of a "screen" to help ventilate heat. I can't afford water cooling since before anything else, I need a new PSU. However, looking at all the numbers with HWMonitor, nothing inside is anywhere near an overheat level. The CPU runs at about 40c, and the GPU at 60c. The only thing that runs abnormally/suspiciously hot is the PSU at 120c, according to the monitor.

Edit: And another one just happened today. These things have been getting more frequent and it's pissing me off.

For the first time in over a year, the crash screen lasted long enough for me to actually take a picture to show what it looks like, since describing it accurately isn't easy.

                          WP_20160908_00_07_14_Pro.jpg

The crash screen can be and has been basically any color, and it always has those lines across it. It doesn't show up in the picture because of how fast I had to take it, but the lines are all different colors as well.

You can get the new PSU no problem but, if you just run the PC out to town to a localized AsRock dealer they should be able to get a full diagnostic at a cost of 30$ plus they will not only recommend a PSU or fix, but install the hardware also.

Depends on if you want to solve it, sometimes the only way is to solve a board problem, is to get the entire PBC tested using emery test tools. Then you can ship under warranty back to AsRock along with receipt an get a replacement. Those boards should be good for 3-5 years.

Check your documentation, or just run to shop and purchase a new board of choice , guessing you have a Full-ATX, all new boards will fit your case

I am having this same problem but on my partners Acer Aspire E 15 that was purchased brand new yesterday.

"A fatal hardware error has occurred.

                        Component: AMD Northbridge"

                        etc..

This is the second time we have purchased a computer with an AMD processor and this is the second time we have had this problem, the first time we thought it was just bad luck but now I am starting to wonder if its just a fault with AMD processors as I have never had these sorts of issues with the many Intel based computers we have owned. I have also tried all of the methods described in the OP post but nothing solves this problem and being a laptop I wouldn't think that it's a power issue, but I guess anything is possible. Personally I think it's a problem with the CPU but I cannot say for sure. If anyone has a solution or any suggestions I'm sure there are a lot of people that would appreciate it including myself. and thanks to the people that replied so far, I tried updating the BIOS but unfortunately for me there wasn't an update available for my model.

I have the same  issue and fix it  sucessfully

amd turbocore technology overclock the computer automatically, but it often  make the system hangs

just turn off turbocore  and all auto overclock function in bios

                              I'll try that.

I have this problem with AMD Northbridge causing restarts for about 2 years already but in the past the computer restarted maybe once in a month, sometimes once in 2-3 months. Now I updated Windows 10 to Fall Creators and I get those restarts 2-3 times/day. It's really annoying. I searched Google a lot, I tried all the solutions but none seem to work. I'll try to turn off the turbocore just like you said, it would be awesome if this solves the problem. I'll let you know, thanks!

I setup a system for my son the same motherboard. It has gone through several cpu: FX6300, FX6350 and the last FX8310. It all worked fine the weird setting on this motherboard is setting at Auto: Turbo Clock & APM, best set at Enabled. It seems the auto setting is a mess and tied to Overclock mode. I just kept the setting on those CPUs. I came off from a Asrock 970 Extreme Pro2.0 and its setting is not wonky as the 980DE

Sadly it happened again. I disabled turbo core but that didn't solve the problem. I tried all 3 settings auto/enabled/disabled but it happens again.

A fatal hardware error has occurred.

What else should I try to disable? I did reset BIOS to default settings and then turned off turbo core but almost everything else is set to auto so I guess it still does some overclocking. If you have any ideas please help me and let me know. Bios is updated to latest version, all drivers are updated, ssd and hdd have no errors, psu is also ok for my config - Antec truepower 550w gold rated. It has to be a driver or some settings...

Hey! I had this problem for a long time and what made it stop for me was going into Power Options, then "Choose What The Power Button Does", then "Change settings that are currently unavailable" then UNCHECK "Turn on fast startup (recommended)" then hit "save changes". SHUT DOWN the computer completely, then turn it back on. Something about that setting causes fatal errors. I hope this helps, best of luck!

I have turned off fast boost as well. If this doesnt change anything then i will revert back to Windows 7. My motherboard doesnt support Windows 10 completely as there are few drivers missing from the manufactures website for Windows 10 (chipset, usb) and i am using the default Windows drivers for the same.

As weird as this sounds, these reboots only started to appear after i updated Windows 10 to Fall Creators. I did not had this issue before on windows 10 as well.

Not a single bsod since I disabled "fast startup". I had 2-3/day before, now 0 in 9 days. Thank you so much! But I still can't understand how is this possible... I had those even after 4-5 hours of using the pc without restarting it, then how "fast startup" could cause them if I started the computer 5 hours ago? It makes no sense to me.

Yeah, it's definitely weird. I randomly got the BSOD again a few weeks ago, went into the power settings again and the fall Windows 10 update turned the setting back on. So I'm pretty much certain at this point that setting is the problem. Anyway, glad it worked for you as well!!

Hello guys, first time posting here.

                                                        I got the same error

A fatal hardware error has occurred.

                                                        Component: AMD Northbridge

                                                        Error Source: Machine Check Exception

                                                        Error Type: 11

                                                        Processor APIC ID: 0

I was thinking at first that it was a hardware error, but restarts coincided with Fall Creators Update. My folks' PC was restarting every 5-6 days after getting it, and it has FX 6300 for cpu as well.

I have changed the setting and now I'm waiting to see if the problem is solved, or should i get them a new mobo/psu. Hopefully this fixes it.

Some guys at Tom's Hardware are having the same issue, and I have linked this thread there.

This is the thread. Random restarts after last Windows 10 update. - Components

Also, I have reported this problem directly to Microsoft support, hopefully, they will do something about it in the future, buuuut, that is really a long shot. In case You want to make Your problem heard You can go here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus/ start the chat with the bot and ask to speak with the real person ( yes, process is that complicated, as far as I know, there is no way to chat with somebody directly, but maybe I'm wrong)

The way i see it, we have two options - installing pre-Fall Creators Update version of windows and disabling updates or hoping that this works (and for me this is the preferred option, since I have spent way too much time dealing with this mess)

And I am almost completely certain that this is not a hardware problem, coincidence of so many mobos failing at the same time from the same cause is simply too great.

This PC will be running almost 24\7, I'll use it as my main and I will report back on how it performs.

Also CPU and GPU stress tests are not causing any instability, as well as games, which are working flawlessly. There is no overheating, and I have tried different memory modules. Also - I did a clean reinstall of windows. And checked SSD and HDD for errors.

And of course - I apologize for the wall of text

Same here. Anyway, no restarts since I have disabled fastboot, hopefully, it will stay like this.

Will update in a few days.

If i remember correctly you need to do a clear format if this happens. The reason it's doing that is your driver is incorrect. When you installed it you install over another driver. An they where two completely different types of drivers. So you can do two things.

1.Go to another computer install that hard drive.Load the other hard drive an not the one installed. Once on desktop. Remove the driver installed on that corrupted disk. Then remove that drive an put it back in its original computer it will show an error but you can then remove both drivers using the AMDCleaner. Problem solved.

                                                    2. Strait up Clean format.Removing all data or running the repair. I would recommend this OR third option.

3.Use the repair CD or try to get into safe mode on Windows 10 HA! Good luck on that. An from there uninstall the driver.

                                                      Hi!

Same issue here since Win10 FCU. FX 6300, random restart (1-2 times a week) with MCE NB protocol error (code 11).

Possible causes ruled out so far:

                                                      Overclock, Voltage, RAM, Turbo

Don't think it's a hardware failure or weakness either.

Did the fast boot trick solved the issue for you guys?

I have the same problem. When my pc is demanded in a game, it restarts putting the screen of some random color. "kernel power" and "northbridge" appear in the windows event log. The source I try to discard, because because of this error I bought a new one that I have placed now. My doubt is between the video card and the mother, but I went to a friend's house, we exchanged graphic cards (if my PC was restarting it was the mother, if he restarted his was my video card), 4hs of test and no pc gave error, but when I put my graph back in its place it failed and it restarted when forced.

This problem occurs in both w10 and w8.1.

Rumor has it that it is strictly connected to Fall Creators Windows 10 update that took place some time ago.

A fatal hardware error has occurred.

                                                            Component: AMD Northbridge

                                                            Error Source: Machine Check Exception

Error Type: HyperTransport Watchdog Timeout Error

                                                            Processor APIC ID: 0

                                                            1. Clean re-install of GPU drivers does not work. It happens with all drivers. I went through even older ones.

                                                            2. System is not overheating (HWinfo64 in use).

                                                            3. Clean re-install of the whole Windows 10 (Delete user data and clean drives option) does help but only until we update GPU drivers.

                                                            4. Power socket, power brick, socket extender all are in working order. No spikes or unnatural behaviour.

Pretty much, once we update anything GPU related on the system, the whole system goes nuts and likes to restart at random. Never during gameplay. Always when idle.

Possible solution that minimized the severity of the issue (It is still there):

                                                            1. Turn off Fast Startup (Which all of us did).

                                                            2. Disable Superfetch service (in CMD type services.msc, then look for Superfetch, then Disable and restart).

                                                            3. In the Advance Power options, change the minimum processor state from 0% to 5%.

Now the restarts are happening but not each 10 minutes as it used to be .

The issue itself is a weird one and remains unresolved though.

I tried disabling the fast boot option and worked flawlesly for 9 days. Now today I had a reebot. Laptop is like 2 moths old.

Make sure you get all the Windows 10 updates as they go...the few latest ones seem to help out with the issue a bit. Funny enough, I just got another restart few moments after exiting Mechwarrior Online game and trying to log here to answer.

Another thing to try is to get AMD Clean Uninstall utility from their website, get rid of the drivers in Safety Mode, and then try installing them again using the Automatic Driver Install tool. PLEASE BE AWARE, that this process will be a pain in the neck. It was for me. After uninstalling everything, that includes everything AMD GPU from Device Manager, I could not get the dedicated GPU to install properly...but after a few restarts and relaunches of the GPU driver install tool I managed to get it right. Now I get a restart every now and then but it is perfectly fine. Few more updates from MS and we should be fine.

PC works fine without GPU drivers, northbridge error starts appearing as soon as I install them. Sometimes it's when the pc is idle, but almost everytime I try to play a game such as Overwatch/Fortnite. Hope someone comes up with a fix soon. In the mean time I'll try to get a downgraded version of win10 to see if that fixes the issue.

                                                                            The fix:

installed latest Crimson drivers from AMD for my GPU (still kept restarting & Device Manager Manager showing Amd chipset drivers not installed properly).

Next went to site :  AMD Chipset Drivers Chipset Drivers v.17.10 for Windows 10, Windows 10 64-bit, Windows 7, Windows 7 64-bit, Windows 8, W…

                                                                            & down loaded:

Unpacked and ran installer.  This added to existing Crimson driver in some way ?  It then showed new drivers available for my computer so clicked on install. Voila a fully working computer again.  Device manager shows all drivers installed correctly and no random restarts

Spent many hours looking at both Amd and HP's website trouble shooting - nothing.  Nothing similar on web

I just realized I was only stopping the process. I'm also going to look into updating the AMD chipset. I remember last time I updated the GPU driver (Radeon software) I didn't see any chipset available.

The crashes began I believe on 4/18/18. The windows version is 16299.371. I have yet to investigate whether that version of windows is causing the problem.

My moba is pretty old and hasnt done much to update for Windows10.

I began getting these random "crashes"/restarts after the Fall Creators update also.

However, I was able to reinstall Windows 10 without the update, but I still get the random restarts about once every 24 hours of use.

This process takes a very long time, but it might be worth it, especially if you are getting restarted every 30 minutes like I was.

It would do a sudden reboot every couple days even after disabling Fast Startup. I saw the same Microsoft-Windows-WHEA-Logger messages and occasionally a Stop error that pointed to ntkernel as the source.

On the same day I installed a BIOS update from HP. I don't know if it was 1803 or the BIOS update that did it, but my HP EliteBook 755 G3 is now stable for a solid week of normal use. Has anyone else noticed this with 1803 or did HP actually address the issue?

In the logs it looks like the AMD video driver is crashing and restarting. I'll take this over a sudden reboot any day.
