How to disable monitor auto detect

I'm running 2 monitors. A 27" 4K (Dell P2715Q) primary and a 55" 1080p secondary tv (via hdmi) mostly for movies next to each other.

Most of the time I only use the primary, sometimes I use both, and when watching movies just the TV with the primary off.

I was using a older monitor on dvi but had to switch to displayport for the new 4k monitor. Now when I turn off the primary monitor to watch movies it's removed from  the system and all my windows and icons get messed up. This didn't happen on dvi.

How do I prevent auto detection of turning off the primary? It's ok if it the secondary is auto detected or not. I want the primary to act like it's always there.

Alternatively is there a way to put just the primary monitor to sleep with a hot-key? Win-P doesn't work because it disables, not sleeps, the monitor. Same result as physically turning it off.

Using Win10 with a 7970 and Catalyst 15.7.1 (currently latest).
