Fail to POST - 9950x with ROG x670E Crosshair Hero - Stuck on 62 Boot Code

I have a crosshair x670E Hero and was using it with a 7950x. I upgraded the BIOS to 2204 and the PD  Firmware to version 4 today, and everything worked fine.

I then switched to a new 9950x CPU and the motherboard fails to boot the system with a "code 62" - accoring to the Motherboard Spec 62 =  "Installation of PCH runtime services". Even though the PC doesnt boot, and I couldn't get to the BIOS, I still tried 3 different BIOS versions using a tool on the Crosshair called Eazy BIOS which basically applies new BIOS versions from a USB stick without needeing to boot to the BIOS GUI. I also reset the CMOS a few times.

I also removed all USB/PCIe/M.2 connected devices including my GPU, but still didnt make any difference.

Has anyone got the 9950x working yet with this motherboard ? I have read a few other people with the same issue. Is this a broken CPU ?

I would advise anyone thinking of buying a 9950 to wait first, and to see if this is resolved, as this is a massive pain to swap CPUs after you've applied thermal paste etc. I have now switched back to my 7950.

My system

Motherboard : x670E Crosshair Hero (Wifi)

CPU : AMD 9950x

BIOS :Version 2403 ( I also tried with 2204 using the Easy BIOS)

PD Firmware : Version 004

Memory: 2 x DDR5 96GB (2 x 48GB)  Trident Z5 NeoRGB (AMD Expo) 5600MT/s CL40-40-40-89 1.25V UDIMM -  (F5-5600J4040D48GX2-TZ5NR)

PSU : ASUS ROG Thor 1200W

GPU : NVidia 4090 RTX TUF

M.2 NVMe SSDs - Various

After swapping the AMD 7950x back in and everything working again, I contacted ASUS motherboard support and they told me to RMA the motherboard, and wait roughly a month while they investigated it (at my expense). Obviously I am not doing that, so I am sending the AMD 9950x chip back for a refund. Too bad, with slow sales of the 9950 you'd think AMD would want to help me get this sorted out quickly but this just shows you their lack of committment to support. Best to not buy one of these new chips at the moment, as not many people are using them, which means AMD and ASUS are not really that bothered if they work or not. Save your money for now, the price is going to bomb soon, and if they finally eg things working before the 3D cache versions come out it might be worth considering.

marcusob, did you install a fresh copy of Windows including formatting your C: disk in GPT? Do, if not, John.

The machine doesn't boot how can it run windows or do anything at all ? It is not stuck on the booting of windows, it is stuck before the BIOS can come up, ie no disk access - therefore it doesnt matter whether there is a corrupt Windows installation or not, it doesnt even get to the UEFI.

Also as I said in my post above "I also removed all USB/PCIe/M.2" - so I removed all my SSDs therefore windows shouldnt have any ability to corrupt anything, so re-installing windows on a disk wont help, when there are no disks connected to the motherboard it still wont boot to BIOS.

Thanks so much, marcusob, you are so very kind. Have you talked to your MB vendor? What is PD Firmware anyway? Can you get rid of it? Do all MB vendors have PD Firmware these days? Is PD Firmware aimed at your 7950 only? Do you need to clear it to install a new processor? John.
