Radeon Pro WX 3200 4k144hz ?

Hi all,

I've been using the Radeon Pro WX 3200 for a while now. Recently got a larger monitor that can do 4k @ 144hz, when attempting to increase my refresh rate beyond 60hz I get this error:

xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

Dropping the resolution to 1440p, I can increase the refresh rate to 120hz.

I tested the monitor with another computer (laptop) and was able to successfully set 4k120hz.

I thought, perhaps the cable, so I bought a high quality cable and I'm still unable to go beyond 60hz when running 4k resolution on my WX 3200.

Can this card push 4k144hz or even 4k120hz? AMD documentation specifies max resolutions but doesn't specify how high of a refresh rate it can handle.

The only difference I noticed between the specs for Displayport for the w3200 and w6600 is that the w6600 has DP version 1.4 with DSC while the W3200 has DP Version 1.4 without DSC feature.

It is possible with DSC enabled you can get 144hz Refresh rate on the W6600 GPU card. Just guessing  since DP 1.4 is limited to 120Hz according to DP 1.4 specs.

AMD Moderator for AMD Professional GPU card @fsadough can probably answer your question since I am just going by DP 1.4 specs about the Refresh rate. In which case I might be wrong and FSADOUGH can explain the difference in both cards you have in respect to Refresh rate at 4K.

These are the specs for the WX3200 GPU Card:

So your Professional GPU card uses Displayport 1.4. According to Cable Matters DisplayPort version 1.4 supports a Maximum refresh rate of 120Hz for 4K monitor:

What's different about DisplayPort 1.4?

The DisplayPort 1.4 standard was first published in March 2016. While it didn't introduce any new transmission modes, and therefore did not increase the available bandwidth or data rate, it did maintain the strong showing from DisplayPort 1.3. That gives DisplayPort 1.4 a maximum total bandwidth of 32.4Gbps and a maximum total data rate of 25.92 Gbps. That gives it enough bandwidth to handle a 4K UHD stream at up to 120Hz with 24-bit/px color, or a 5K display at up to 60Hz, with 30-bit/px color. It even supports 8K video, but only at up to 30Hz due to the hefty bandwidth demands.

A more important feature of DisplayPort 1.4 is the introduction of Display Stream Compression 1.2 support (DSC). As a visually lossless encoding technique, DSC is a fantastic way to get more for your cabling and with DisplayPort 1.4 and DSC, you can support 4K at up to 120Hz with 30-bit/px color and HDR-enabled, or 8K at up to 60Hz.

Other DisplayPort 1.4 benefits include support for Dual-mode for DVI and HDMI adapters, making it possible to connect a DisplayPort 1.4 device to an HDMI 2.0 source, or vice versa. It also includes better support for HDR10 metadata and forward error correction for a noiseless transmission.

Another major improvement with DisplayPort 1.4 was on the audio front, where it moved from a maximum audio sample rate of 768kHz to 1,536kHz. It also increased the maximum number of audio channels from 8 to 32.

Yes I saw those specs, do you know if the gpu will actually push 4k120hz though? Or if the non-pro equivalent (RX 550) can? Because mine can't push higher than 60 and I want to know if the problem is with my setup or if the card it self is not capable (regardless if the display port version in use can).

Hi,

AFAIK, your card is a workstation model and therefore it doesn't support frequencies higher than 60hz at 4k.

It is a workstation model, but how is that limiting it to 4k at 60hz? For example my other card is also an AMD pro card (W6600) and it pushes 4k @ 144hz just fine.

That makes sense. Thing is I can't even achieve 4k120hz..

Hope @fsadough can shed some light on max officially supported by the card.

Radeon Pro WX 3200 supports:

  • 1x 8K@60Hz using DC (dual cable). This corresponds to 2x 4K@120Hz using DC
  • 1x 4K@144Hz could be supported using DC:
    • So, the trick is to use a monitor that can take dual DP inputs. One 1/2 screen is fed by 1st DP input running 2K@144Hz and the other 1/2 screen is fed by the 2nd DP input running 2K@144Hz

Thanks for the details, in my case, my monitor has:

- 1 x DP 1.4 (DSC)

- 2 x HDMI 2.1

I can conclude that I can't use the WX 3200 to drive it at 4k120hz then. I tried to find adapters but couldn't find anything suitable..
