Hello, I have found an AMD R9 380X graphics card and wanted to use it on a second pc. I have plugged in everything correctly, the GPU does warm up which I think means that it does work, but it doesn't show anything, just a black screen. When I went to check out device manager and install the AMD adrenalin app using Intel's integrated graphics, device manager only showed me the intel's integrated graphics and the AMD adrenalin driver installer thingy showed me an error code 173
Is there any way to sort this out? I want to use my graphics card for a little more intensive things that the Intel's graphics can't handle
According to AMD Support concerning error 173:
Make sure the GPU card is installed in the correct PCIe x 16 slot on the motherboard. If the motherboard has 2 PCIe x 16 slots try the second slot and see if it is recognized.
Make sure you have both GPU Power cables connected from the PSU to the GPU Power connectors:
Do not use a "Y" PSU to GPU power cable to connect both 6 pin GPU power connections using the same PSU cable.
The minimum PSU requirement is 450 watt PSU.
If you have both GPU power cables connected and it still not being recognized, make sure the GPU card is making good contact inside the PCIe x 16 slot and the contacts are clean.
Otherwise I would install the GPU card in another PC and see if the same thing occurs. IF it does it would indicate a defective GPU card. Especially if it is a used GPU card.
Also in BIOS try setting temporarily, if possible if using Windows 11, From UEFI BIOS to CSM BIOS (Legacy) and see if it is recognized.
i did find a switch on the GPU. co
uld it be the culprit?
Yes, According to this thread concerning that switch it is a Dual BIOS Switch. One is for UEFI BIOS and the other is for "LEGACY" BIOS (CSM): https://www.overclock.net/threads/sapphire-r9-380-nitro-little-switch.1597491/
The above mentioned GPU is a Sapphire R9 380 Nitro by the way.
Turn power off to the PC and change the position of the switch to the other side and see if the GPU card is now recognized when you power up.
still didnt help.. Is there anything else I could try, like somehow installing the drivers without the adrenalin software?
Okay first what is your PC information?
Second the best way to eliminate a defective GPU Card is by installing it in another computer and see if the same thing occurs. If it does then that is a good indication of a defective GPU card.
See if you can install the GPU card in a Friend's or Family's computer or take it to a Computer shop to have it tested.
Since you found the GPU card it probably was bad in the first place.
