The purpose of this post is to request information on recovering normal fan operation on a rs280 graphics card
PROBLEM
The fans stopped coming on in the R9 280 I have installed in my 2012 MacPro 5,1. The fans turned on normally when the card was installed, January 2022. The fans have not come on since Feb1, 2025. The R9 280 has been replaced in the MacPro with a spare GTX 680 graphics card/. '
No other malfunctions have been noted in the R9 280.
Trouble shooting has revealed:
a. The fans show no sign of more friction in their spins than when they were new.
b. The fans spin normally when DC voltage is applied to them using an external voltage supply. They start spinning at the lowest voltage available (3.0 volts), and increase spin seed steadily as the voltage increase slowly to a max of 12.5 volts
c. No voltage is detectable at the spot on the circuit board connected to the r9 280 graphics card fans (checked once per minute for 30 minutes after startup of computer and 6 browser screens all running movies.)
I suspect there might be a settings and performance parameters for the R9 280 graphics card that can be read and adjusted with software that runs on Windows but not MacOS.
I have no experience using software to manage graphics cards.
What can I do to get this r9 280 graphics card back to normal fan operations?
Conclusion: This r9 280 graphics card stopped sending voltage to the fans.
