Hello AMD Community,
I’ve been experiencing serious issues with my Lenovo G40-70 laptop (Intel i7-4510U, AMD Radeon HD 8500M and Intel HD Graphics, 6GB DDR3 RAM), and I’m hoping someone here can assist me in finding a solution. The laptop is 10 years old and runs on a Kingston A400 480GB SSD with Windows 10 Pro installed.
Reported Problems:
Frequent Blue Screens: Main Errors:
System Service Exception
Thread Stuck in Device Driver
Video Memory Management Internal
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
These errors started occurring after I abruptly powered off the laptop while playing GTA V. After reinstalling Windows 10, the errors persist.
Issues with Dedicated Graphics Driver (AMD Radeon HD 8500M):
After updating to the latest available driver version (Legacy 27.20.20903.8001, dated 05/11/2021), the laptop continues to show blue screens.
Occasionally, the system freezes when trying to install the drivers.
With the graphics disabled in Device Manager, the laptop works fine but with limited performance.
Previous Interventions:
I used DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to completely remove the old drivers and then clean-installed the latest version, but the issue persists.
Microsoft Technical Support:
In the first support session, attempting to update the graphics driver caused the laptop to freeze.
In the second session, in Safe Mode, the technician identified some drivers with warnings. However, time was wasted trying to update other drivers, resulting in a loss of sound. The system indicated that the drivers with warnings were disabled in Safe Mode, not necessarily faulty.
A third technician ran commands like sfc /scannow in CMD, which generated a log, but when the clean boot was configured, it led to a loop on the "Preparing Windows" screen.
A fourth technician cleared temporary files and ran DISM commands. Later, while interacting with the AMD graphics driver in Device Manager, the laptop froze again, and the "Thread Stuck in Device Driver" error reappeared.
Lenovo Support:
I was referred to a local service center (Montevideo, Uruguay), but I have concerns about the potential for inadequate work or additional issues, along with worries about costs and delays.
Additional Context:
On a different hard drive with Windows 8.1 installed, the graphics are recognized as AMD Radeon HD R5 M230 with a 2013 driver. This system doesn’t show any issues, but I don’t want to modify it because it contains important files.
Request:
I need assistance with:
1. Determining if the problem is solely with the dedicated graphics driver or if there are other contributing factors.
2. Configuring the correct driver for the AMD Radeon HD 8500M on Windows 10 without causing errors.
3. Ensuring system stability for basic tasks.
I appreciate your time and support in helping me resolve this issue.
Thank you in advance, and Merry Christmas to all of you.
