DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HANG in The Finals

Describe your system:

  • GPU: MSI Radeon RX 7900 XTX GAMING TRIO CLASSIC 24G
  • Operating System
    • Windows 11 64bit 24H2 build 26100.3194
  • Driver version installed
    • Radeon Software Adrenaline 24.12.1
  • Display Make and model and connection/adapter in use, resolution, and refresh rate.
    • Huawei MateView 3840x2160 @60Hz on DP port
  • CPU/APU Make and model number
    • Ryzen 9 7900X
  • Motherboard Make & Model + Bios Revision
    • Asus ROG STRIX B650E-F GAMING WIFI, 3067 BIOS
  • Power Supply Unit Make & Model + Wattage
    • Cougar GEM 1200 1200W
  • System Memory Make & Model + Frequency
    • G.Skill TRIDENT Z5 32GB (2x16) @ 6000MTs

Describe your issue:

I experience intermittent game crashes. In Discovery Crash Reporter there are different 3D functions mentioned but with common error message: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED with Reason: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG.

The Finals is my main game atm. But on my limited experience that crashes happened only in The Finals. I played 4hrs of Marvel Rivals, a 96hrs of BG3, 67hrs of Doom Ethernal. No issues whatsoever.

Steps I tried to the moment:

  • Tried optional drivers 25.1.1 and 25.2.1
  • Tried to uninstall driver with AMD Cleanup Utility and DDU
  • Ran PC stability tests: prime95 torure for 24hrs, y-cruncher for 12h, various OCCT stability tests. No issues detected.
  • Ran GPU stability tests: 120 cycles of 3DMark Port Royal, many runs of 20 cycles of Speedway and Steel Nomad.
  • Reset BIOS settings to try to run w/o DOCP

Nothing helped. What could I do more?

- Turn of SAM (Smart Access Memory) in AMD adrenalin

- Turn off secure boot in the BIOS

- Set the windows powerplan to High Performance

- Play games at native settings without upscaling (this is a per game try out)

Hi.

Thanks for suggestions.

  • rn I turned off "Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling". the SAM (or is it ReBAR?) is the next one to try
  • never had secure boot on
  • but AFAIK, AMD itself recommends to use "Balanced" power plan for Zen5 CPUs with latest chipset drivers. Which I have installed, btw.
  • I don't think it is possible to turn off upscaling in The Finals. And if it is possible, I think that performance in 4K would be unplayable.

Smart Access Memory (SAM) is an option within AMD Adrenalin and is known to cause problems with unreal engine games AND easy anti-cheat.

Reszable Bar (Re-bar) is something that should be enabled by default on an AM5 platform and should not be an issue at all.

I am not aware of the balanced powerplan recommendation but i think it's best to at least turn of any sleep/awake functionaly on every applicable device.

Regarding the upscaling i was referring to the upscaling settings from within AMD adrenalin not from within the game. (Radeon Super Resolution)

Besides all this you must realize that it's impossible to play at 4K without experiencing lag and latency stutters, even with upscaling and framegeneration enabled.

You will always have a bottleneck which is unsolvable until there is a GPU with a true 4K raster.

Till then 4K gaming will only be possible with upscaling (unless you like to play at 7 fps).

On the positive side : AMD cards are futureproof and are the best at pure rasterized native peformance.

Although the RX7900 XTX is a powerfull GPU and can play at 4k (some games !) it is recommend to stick at 1440p.

Hi.
So the "Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling" was not the case. Got a crash with it turned off.
Now I am testing AMD SAM switched off. So far so good. Had serveral days without crashes with 1,5-2hrs game sessions.

Update: nope, spoke too soon. Just got game crash with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HANG again with SAM disabled.
