I bought an AMD RX6700XT Reference about a year ago and haven't really done anything with it due to work. I eventually built the card into a gaming PC for my son, but ran into the following issues.
- The card makes sound (coil whine);
- Extremely high temperature during gaming (core: 80 degrees and hotspot 106 degrees);
- Also, the system reboots after about 30 minutes of gaming.
The system contains the following parts:
- Ryzen 9 3900X
- Asus TUF B550M
- 2x 16GB Corsair PC3200
- Samsung SN550 500GB NVME
- Samsung SN570 2000GB NVME
- 2x WB black 4TB
- Power supply Aerocool VX PLUS 600W
When I change the processor for a Ryzen 7 1700 or a Ryzen 5 5500, the system does not crash during games. Maybe the power supply isn't strong enough? Also tested the video card on an Asus x570 prime (with an Antec 650watt power supply) and it doesn't crash on that either.
The question is, can I RMA the video card given the above issues?
Well the aerocool is below the minimum required, it is only a true 550 watt on the 12v rail (most important).
You want a psu with 650W on the 12v rail, these new gen cards are not like of old where you could get away with lower powered psu.
Coil whine could be the card or psu struggling with insufficient power need under heavy load, but also there are some game engines with vsync off that that get into a runaway state in menu/pause (rare).
What case cooling (you want more extract than intake fans).
Consider getting AMD adrenaline and lowing the Power draw by 10% to see if that helps, should help understand if the power draw is too much for your PSU.
As mentioned above consider more fans and taking the side of the case off for now
Go to adrenaline software, in performance tuning go manual and change voltage to 1150 mv, leave other untouched. Coil whine and temps should be fine. Reference model is known for bad cooler design, undervolt to 1150mv gives you some performance while less temperature and power draw and you psu will also be fine.
Definitely agree with goodplay.MVP on this one..
I have the 6700 XT and 850w PSU, Aerocool VX PLUS 600W is not a good one for the newer cards.
If I were you, get a fully modular GOLD rated good quality PSU. Seasonic, Corsair or similar, the PSU is the most important part to get right.
