Open GL performance issues in the game Vintagestory on a 9070 xt, 5800x3d (and other AMD GPUs)

Hey people,

here are my system specs:

  • Gigabyte 9070xt OC
  • 32gb 3600mhz ram
  • Ryzen 7 5800x3d
  • Windows 10
  • 1440p resolution

My game is installed on a SSD, I'm using Adrenalin Edition 25.3.1 default. freesync and vsync are disabled. reBAR is enabled in my BIOS and gets properly detected in the driver (according to the Vintagestory forums this increases performance for AMD GPUs).

Now for the issue: it's been known for quite a while that this game doesn't play well with some AMD systems since some changes to Open GL happened. People report that Adrenalin 22.5.1 might fix this, however I do not want to use a super old driver that might be prone to causing all sorts of other incompatibility issues.

Now inside of the game I get okay framerates at the high preset with a renderdistance value of 256, easiliy up to 200 fps, but I like to cap my framerate to 144. Any remotely capable system is able to run this preset quite well in general. With my 3070 ti had similiarly good performance, even at higher renderdistance values. Here the issues begin on the 9070 xt. At a value of 352, which is still low, I get frametime fluctuations despite having more or less stable framerates around 120. At 512 it gets even worse, there the framerate collapses to 80 and less and the fluctuations get much worse. The GPU utilization sits at 90-100% most of the time, the CPU is barely doing any work, but it didn't do much when I was on a 3070 ti too, so I doubt this is the bottleneck here.

Here an image, if I am not mistaken, of the frametime graph in game, when moving the camera it fluctuates severely:

On a comparable system of a friend with a rtx 4080 and a 5950x the game runs at 300+ fps without any issues at a renderdistance of 576 and it ran stable at 700+ too. Here's a screencapture of the graph they get when quickly moving the camera around:

So for whatever reason my 9070 xt is struggling with this game. Every other game runs fine, some even at way beyond 200 fps. Kingdome Come Deliverance 1 for example runs at 200+ fps at 1440p on ultra settings and I generally get similiarly geat performance across all sorts of games. So I am beyond confused as to what this is about. I know the Vintagestory devs gave contacted AMD about performance issues for their game specifically, but apparently nothing happened to address this.

So I want to know if there is anything that can be done about this. I expected a significant performance boost with this GPU, instead I got a performance decrease and terrible stuttering.

Thanks in advance for any help. If there's something I can do to look deeper into this let me know. I am not too tech savvy but simple troubleshooting should be doable.
