Driver update issues - Freezing / stuttering under medium to high load

I seem to be having some major issues with my Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX-6700-XT 12GB graphics card

I think it has to be related to the drivers though.

This issue is awful freezing of the video output as well as loud spikes / buzzes in the audio when the graphics card is put under more load (but nowhere near what it is capable of.

The video demonstrates this well. I have purposely recorded with a camera and microphone externally as you can’t demonstrate the exact same issues with a desktop recording. As you can see, when I start a recording, the game then is awfully messed up and the sounds and stuttering is almost worrying. Every time it does this and I restart windows, the AMD software resets the custom fan curve and other settings to default. They are not related to this as even if I leave them like this, I can repeat the same issue.

This problem occurs in all steam games I play. Far more likely when I’m in a call on skype or discord and almost guaranteed now if i stream / share screen while in a game which was never the case before.

I really hope that this is just an issue with the latest drivers and it will be fixed.

I use both Linux (Ubuntu 20.04 LTS) and Windows 10 on the same PC and Ubuntu has no problems with this card.

I only use steam with Windows and that is where the problems are. I think they have come since the latest AMD drivers software program and this has been happening very often in the past 2 weeks especially, and I may not have thought / been as aware initially depending on how much i was in games.

This is what the AMD Software program says I’m on, and shows the date it was updated:

Adrenalin Edition Version

24.12.1

Released 27/11/2024

I am aware plenty will likely tell me that it is about time I updated to Windows 11 (as well as the latest version of Ubuntu LTS), but I don’t believe this is a reason for these issues and it is still supported for almost another full year.

This is my motherboard if helpful: Gigabyte B550M AORUS PRO-P AMD Motherboard

I have made a lot of effort with the cooling of the case and while I have a very low RPM set for the graphics card, It virtually never gets over 70 (GPU temp, not junction) degrees despite me only having the fans at 35%.

My case has the PSU at the top, and the graphics card right at the base. Having 2 high speed case fans at the top pulls in plenty of cool air at the bottom, so heat should be entirely unrelated.

Any suggestions on what this may be?

Thanks.

If you feel the issue started with the upgrade to Adrenalin 24.12.1 have you tried reverting to a previous version?

I'm not quite sure how you go backwards on the version, but would be worth trying. If that isn't the cause, I am really stuck.

All I can say is that since this post, I can always trigger this problem by recording videos while playing games by using windows+alt+r. And no matter how hard i run the graphics card in Ubuntu, I have no problems.

My video doesn't seem to be playable yet as if it hasn't been reviewed by a moderator.

You install the previous version.

I've tried installing that and I get thie message:

Error 205 - AMD Software installation completed successfully but Windows Update may have everted your driver version during the process.

Looking in the AMD program, it is still on the latest version.

I don't understand any of this stuff and it doesn't appear to be as simple as just installing the previous version.

I have seen a few posts with similar issues being noted. I still can't understand why my video isn't playable though.

I think the new driver version 25.1.1 will come out soon, maybe this week or next week, I'm waiting for new version too, many people also have reported that 24.12.1 not stable.
