Davinci Resolve 18.6.6 crashing with driver 24.7.1

Hello,

I've been having issues with Davinci Resolve free editor related to AMD drivers from what I observed. Everytime I drop a .mp4 video (AVC and HEVC tested) and try to drag/drop or play in the editor, the entire application just crashes. Tried different configurations in the editor with no differences unfortunately.

CPU: R5 3600X

GPU: RX6600 8GB

32GB DDR4 3600MHz

Mobo Asus TUF B550-plus

Windows 11 Pro 64-bit

When analyzing a crash dump produced by application in Visual Studio I see calls related to OpenCL modules, which apparently tells me this is a driver issue probably(?).

I don't remember at which driver version I was able to use this software without issues, but recently I have issues with both 24.6.1 and 24.7.1 drivers. Both drivers were clean reinstalled with DDU tool with no differences in this issue.

Is this a driver issue? Or maybe a software issue? Maybe I should report this to Blackmagic Design team too?

Best Regards,

Rafael.

I have the same setup you have and have zero problems with DaVinci resolve. have you tried reinstalling Davinci?

Yes, did uninstalled all the four components with Revo Uninstaller, removed remaining files and registry data, installed again and nothing has changed.

Very interesting!  I wonder what type of file corruption could be causing it to have such issues or possibly a virus that has yet to be detected hmm very interesting to say the least, please keep us posted if you find a solution before us, please!

I am having this same issue, and I posted in the Davinci forums.

https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=206157

I DDU uninstalled to 23.8.2, as per recommendation, and that did fix it. But I don't want to be using a year old driver, when I need some of the fixes in the more recent drivers for games I play.

The tech support there said they have the same system as me--7900XTX, 24.7.1 latest drivers, and he has no issues. But I do have issues. So it must be a combination of those drivers plus something else. I am just trying to guess what it could be. If anyone here has ideas, would love to hear them!

@addiepie79 what are your system specs, for it to be working on latest drivers? Here is what I have,

7950x CPU

7900XTX - 24.7.1 latest drivers

x670e Taichi w/ latest bios 3.03

64gb Expo 6000mhz g skill memory

Edition Windows 11 Pro
Version 23H2
Installed on ‎12/‎26/‎2023
OS build 22631.3958
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22700.1026.0

I provided their tech support what they asked for in my google drive, here;

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1szruiSMV6-KhNOKuhIYnm2EWo_ndE2lw?usp=sharing

dxdiag, system info, and crash logs from Resolve. The only thing that makes this crash happen, is upgrading past 23.8.2 driver version. Anything after that, just breaks. Crashes upon mp4 media adding.

Watched the video you recorded at 3rd attempt and that's exactly what happens on my end.

I was thinking of posting at their forums but never did. Still looking for a solution

I'm having problems too, and from what I've seen, countless people who use a Radeon RX6xxx GPU are having problems too, many without solutions.

Come on, until approximately 2 weeks ago I was using MacOS Sonoma on my PC (Hackintosh) it was working 99% well, I only had BSODs every now and then and I didn't have the patience or time to redo my entire EFI from scratch to make the system 100% stable. Well, I decided to format it to use Windows 11, and at that moment my saga began.

I work editing in Davinci Resolve Studio and since I installed Windows 11 I can no longer edit. When I put some clips in the mediapool, Davinci starts consuming ALL the available RAM (16GB) and makes the system use an incredible 51GB of Swap, making it completely unusable , sometimes it crashes before I can see the timeline. I tested Windows 10, with davinci 18 and it worked a little better, but it still consumed all the RAM to generate the thumbnails in the mediapool and also in the timeline, but it was possible to edit, in Windows 11 it was impossible, I tested the drivers 24.7.1, 24.6 .1, 24.5.1, 24.4.1, 23.2.1 and none of them resolved it, at the moment I'm going to install a BIOS update and see if it helps.

Is anyone else going through this or has and has a solution?

My Setup:
B450M Steel Legend
CPU: Ryzen 5 Pro 4650G

RAM: 16GB

GPU: RX6600m (Chinese workaround)

NVMe: XPG SX8200 Pro 2TB

PSU: MSI MAG A650BN
Windows 11 Pro 23h2 - COMP: 22631.4037 (installed less than 1 week ago)
Davinci Resolve Studio 19 beta 6

I had the same problem after switching from NVIDIA GTX 1070 to AMD RX6650 XT.
Clean driver install.
Version 24.7.1
Davinci Resolve 18.6.6 or 19 beta 6.

Tried numerouse versions of drivers, ended up with 24.5.1.

But today BlackMagic released DaVinci Resolve 19 and it seems fine with 24.7.1.

Haven't tried editing anything demanding yet but fingercrossed.

With Davinci 19 and the 24.7.1 driver it is working much better, but unfortunately Windows cannot extract the same performance from AMD cards that MacOS can. I'm about to go back to hackintosh just to gain back 40% more in general performance, in davinci this is so noticeable, that in windows I need to generate a proxy to edit 4k30 clips in a 1080p timeline, whereas in Hackintosh I never needed it generate proxy for this.

I still have the same issue, with DaVinci 19 and even latest 24.8.1 drivers. Does anyone have any ideas to try?

In case anyone else finds this post through google or something, here is the solution.

I spent WEEKS going crazy trying different versions of the driver, using DDU, using the AMD cleanup utility. I even did a fresh windows reinstall. Nothing worked beyond those 23.8.2 drivers.

I found someone on reddit mentioned that they dug really deep into it, and found the error was related to rivatuner statistics server. They claim it was trying to hook resolve. Not sure what that means, but I disabled the RTSS application that was powering my little OSD for streaming, and now everything works.

Not sure if that is an issue with RTSS or Resolve or AMD, but that combination does not work. Disable RTSS. This comes packaged with MSI afterburner, and many third party gpu tweaking tools. As well as a number of streamer plugins and apps that run display panels, as RTSS is what polls the data from your PC to populate the display planel.

I second to what Jeconti said, i was also having crashes in Davinci Resolve while trying to add a video to the timeline, the fix that i discovered myself was to completely exit MSI Afterburner and Riva Tuner and try to run Resolve again, this time there was no crash whatsoever  and i could scroll to the video in the timeline without any problems.
