To start on a positive note, I just noticed that my power draw, which was 70W during video playback, has now dropped to 35W with the 7900xtx on the new driver. Which is great!
But I have noticed two things that aren't great.
- I use the overlay for testing ingame settings for micro stutter. It's helped me diagnose and fix a lot of stuttering in games. However, since the update, opening the overlay has been dropping my FPS to my monitors refresh rate in certain games. GW2, WoT, BG3 are some that I've had the issue with so far. Other games like PoE, EvE or WoW don't seem to be affected.
- The other thing, and I haven't tested this in depth, but it seems that frame rates are more sporadic and there is definitely more micro stuttering going on. Which I've seen other people mention as well.
I've used the uninstall tool, downloaded the drivers and even chose factory install. This didn't fix the issue.
In affected games, with the overlay open, tabbing out and back in has on some occasions fixed the issue. However, it's inconsistent and I can't do this reliably. Affected games will briefly display a higher fps when tabbing back in and drop back down to a consistent 165fps (my monitor's refresh rate). I have no FPS limiters enabled ingame or in adrenaline. I tried this with default settings and the issue persists.
Is anyone else having this problem?
Edit: I seem to have fixed the issue. Although everything was working fine on the prior driver, things did break as soon as I installed the new one. Maybe it was something else, but the timing must have been so close that I can't say for certain. It seems that the solution was to install my monitor's drivers...who knew. I even tried reformatting, completely fresh install, new drivers, nothing worked. I installed the monitor drivers to fix another issue and than I noticed the overlay was working properly again. It no longer caps FPS to my monitor's refresh rate and stuttering seems to be back to normal.
If anyone else comes across this issue, I'm on a 7950x3d, 7900xtx with an aw3423dwf. I'll keep an eye on things. If it comes back, I'll mention it. This was very strange indeed.
