Hey.
So I recently bought the 7800X3D, and XFX Qick 7800xt to upgrade my old pc setup. I also bought a new MSI B650 Gaming Plus motherboard, and a 750w power supply that is ACI3.0 rated, and is Gold rated. It’s a very good power supply with thousands of excellent reviews.
So I gutted my pc case, and installed all the new parts. All the fans are turning, the GPU fans are running, cpu fans are running, everything looks great.
Now it’s time to POST and let the PC boot up so I can format my ssd, and install a fresh copy of windows, and access the BIOS, but the thing is, there is no output signal from the GPU to the Monitor. I get a black screen, and I’ve tried waiting 30 minutes, but still nothing. There is a VGA white light “ON” when I turn the pc on. I’ve verified that the GPU is hooked up properly, and the two 8 pin power “In” on the GPU is hooked up.
I also tried taking the GPU out, and connecting the monitor to the motherboard’s video out, but I still don’t get anything on my monitor.
The next thing I tried was taking out the new 7800xt, and reinstalling my old GTX1060, and the pc boots up into windows, and works perfectly.
Could this be caused by having Nvidias graphics drivers installed, but not having AMD graphics driver installed?
why would I get a black screen. I can’t even access the bios with my new 7800xt. Help!
It sounds like you’ve done a great job with your upgrade, but running into a black screen can be frustrating! First, consider updating the BIOS on your MSI B650 motherboard, as it may not be compatible with the 7800 XT out of the box. Check the MSI website for any updates and use your GTX 1060 to access the BIOS if necessary. Even if everything seems connected, double-check all cables, especially the PCIe power cables and GPU seating in the motherboard slot, as reseating the GPU can sometimes solve issues. Additionally, try clearing the CMOS by removing the battery for a few minutes or using the clear CMOS jumper on the motherboard.
While your PSU is rated well, ensure it's providing sufficient power, and double-check the connections. Make sure your monitor is set to the correct input source, and test different cables or ports on both the monitor and GPU. Although having Nvidia drivers installed shouldn’t cause the black screen, it’s a good idea to completely remove them before trying the AMD card, using a tool like DDU in safe mode. If possible, test the 7800 XT in another system to rule out a faulty GPU. If you’ve tried all these steps and still can’t get it to output a signal, reaching out to XFX support or considering a warranty exchange might be the next best step. Good luck, and I hope you get it sorted out soon!
The VGA White LED light was that on the Motherboard (Motherboard Trouble LED Lights) or on the VGA GPU Card?
If it was the Motherboard's Trouble VGA LED light that was on that means that your GPU card failed during POST or has problems.
I would uninstall the Nvidia GPU Driver and install the AMD Driver that is compatible with both your AMD APU Processor and GPU card.
After uninstalling the Nvida GPU driver using Display Driver Uninstaller reboot with the GPU card installed and see if you get any video output from the GPU card.
Some GPU cards at times does not have video output during POST only when Windows starts loading does it have Video Output.
When booting into Windows without any Graphic's driver installed you should still get Video output because Windows will install its own native MS Basic Display Adapter Graphic driver thus giving you video output once Windows starts loading.
If you connect your monitor to the Motherboard using your AMD APU IGPU then you should still get video output using the same Windows native Graphics driver.
Make sure you have BIOS set for UEFI MODE and not CSM MODE.
Also with new RAM installed the Motherboard goes through a RAM "Training" period before booting up. It can take several minutes. But once the training is done it should boot up normally after that.
NOTE: This is the latest AMD Driver that is compatible with both your 7800x3D and 7800XT GPU card: https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/release-notes/RN-RAD-WIN-24-8-1.html
You should be able to install the above linked AMD Driver since your have a AMD IGPU processor.
I would install your Nvidia GPU card and boot up into Windows. Than uninstall the Nvidia GPU driver and install the AMD GPU driver and reboot and see if you get video output from your motherboard's Video ports when Windows starts loading.
Thank you for your detailed explanation. I really appreciate it.
Will try uninstalling Nvidia Driver with my old GPU, then try powering up with my new GPU, as soon as I get off work in about an hour.
will report back if that fixes the issue or not.
I spent about $1500 on this new build, so I’m very frustrated, I hope it works with the Nvidia drivers uninstalled.
thanks once again!
It seems like you’ve done a solid job with the installation and initial troubleshooting. Since your system works fine with the old GTX 1060, the issue likely lies in how the new 7800XT is interacting with your motherboard. The white VGA light suggests the system isn’t properly detecting the GPU. One common solution is to check if your motherboard’s BIOS is up to date. Sometimes, newer GPUs require a BIOS update for compatibility, so heading to MSI’s support page and updating the firmware might resolve this.
Driver conflicts shouldn’t be a factor at this stage since the GPU should still allow the system to POST even without the right drivers. However, uninstalling the NVIDIA drivers before installing the 7800XT could help once the system is running. Double-check that the GPU is fully seated in the PCIe slot and that both 8-pin power connectors are properly connected to ensure the card is getting enough power.
Lastly, it’s worth resetting the CMOS to clear any settings that could be interfering with the new GPU. If the issue persists, there’s a possibility the card might be faulty. If possible, testing the 7800XT in another system could help determine if the issue is with the GPU itself or something else in the setup.
You're very welcome! I completely understand the frustration after such a big investment, but hopefully uninstalling the Nvidia drivers will do the trick. Best of luck with the process, and I’m here if you need further help when you try it out. Let me know how it goes!
