Just built a 9800X3D PC – Is it safe to to undervolt/OC with recent issues?

Hey guys, just finished my first PC build with a 9800X3D and was thinking about trying a bit of undervolting or light OC

But with all the stuff going around about these chips burning out, I’m kinda nervous. Do we know if undervolting or overclocking might be related? If something happens, would warranty still cover it? Or should I just leave it all stock for now?

Here’s the main stuff in my build:

  • Ryzen 7 9800X3D

  • MSI X670E Gaming Plus WiFi

  • 32GB DDR5 6400MHz CL32

  • RX 9070 XT

  • Be Quiet! Pure Power 12 M 850W Gold

  • Corsair Nautilus 360 AIO

Would really appreciate any advice. still new to all this and I don’t wanna mess things up.

Recent issues?

Make sure you have latest non-beta bios and you should be good.

Warranty void: read the terms, I don't remember but if you have any trouble on problems before you send it to repair, remove motherboard battery to remove any data from the motherboard.

But I guess you shouldn't face any issues.

Easiest way to undervolt is to use the BIOS setting Curve Optimizer. Per Core setting, set around -20 and -30. Your system will be unstable if you make it too low. CS2 for example instantly gives WHEA error reports about stability, but you should use Prime95 to see L3 cache errors popping up.

I don't think you can cause your CPU to 'burn out' by giving it less than the standard voltage; undervolting gives it less voltage and hence less current will flow and less heat will be the result you can expect.  The trick is to do it in small increments to see the effect without getting into unstable operating conditions.  If you are going for the most performance you can get out of the CPU, you wouldn't be looking at undervolting the CPU, but you might focus on an even better cooling solution (like a 360 radiator with six fans pulling air through it).

The only thing I've seen recently (within the last month) concerning 9800X3D was the ASRock statement concerning "debris" in the socket.

What recent reports are you referring to that prompted your concern/question?
